Good for them. I don't much like point and click adventure games, and Double Fine dropped the ball big time with Brutal Legend imo, but good for them.

That's kinda the thing though, i thought brutal legend was funny and had a good story and some good art, it was the gameplay that sucked. I imagine that if they do a point and click adventure that just focuses on puzzles, narrative and jokes it'll be great.

Let's hope Obsidian jumps on kickstarter too!

The difference is that Double Fine have an idea which they're passionate about and are gaining funding through this so that they have full artistic/creative license. Obsidian are asking the fans for what they should make next and then gain subsequent funding for it - how can they be fully behind a project which doesn't necessarily derive from them?

I think Grift made a similar/the same point somewhere.

Yea.. I still want to see them do it but they have to really sell it. Something that speaks to their own interest is probably as important as anything their fanbase will pitch them. I do also think that nostalgia and fan interest helps Double Fine, and could work to Obisidan's advantage. They do have to sell it.. but you can immediately tell that Double Fine is seriously interested in making something awesome that they could not otherwise get the funding for. It's sorta brilliant.

And Kickstarter has worked for indies in the past, but on a much smaller scale. Investing in a project like this does require a little faith on the part of user.. but at $15 you've got a great price point too, especially when the only return on investment that you need to promise is a digital copy of your game. I love the idea. Peoples.

Yeah the idea is awesome indeed.

It could be important in a time where we're swamped with so much repetition.

The issue of trust is a big deal though. Start ups won't find anywhere near this level of success regardless of how good their idea is or how enthusiastic they are to make it.

This is true.
I like the idea of the bigger names working more with their fans though.
Seems like a natural evolution.
I know people like DICE and others take a lot of input from their communities but this is the next level I think.

I guess it also depends on how this all turns out too though.

Fan input can be tricky too. There are a lot of voices. That's one of the reasons why I think it's good to have a strong internal direction. I like that Double Fine didn't need to ask.

I wish I could set up a Kickstarter project on behalf of Ubisoft to get a decent Spies vs Mercs made :(
