I read all 3 books a month or so ago so I'm pretty excited to see this film adaptation. It's gotten solid reviews so far and the cast is really looking good!

Seeing it this Friday on opening day at 9:30 pm!

Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qoUT7q2iTbQ

Anyone else here read the books before?

Well I think Battle Royal looks like The Running Man.

Not really..

The comparison is pretty valid, but yeah stories based on battles to the death in arenas date back to the Romans
Battle Royale is good too, but for different reasons.

I really recommend the books though. It's pretty heavy in politics and is a good satire on America

Well it's not like it's a theme that's been done to death so there's certinly room for it, and i guess it looks interesting enough. What i liked about BR though was that there were none of the hollywood tropes in it (albet just replaced with the japanese equivalents) so it felt a bit fresh, this looks like it kinda has all the predictable stuff required of a US feature film.

But yeah, the trailer looks good. I'm defo interested in seeing it at least :)

As an avid sci-fi/fantasy reader, I found the books pretty light. Doesn't mean I didnt enjoy them though. If its a satire on the US its not a very good one, IMO...

I didn't expect to read The Hunger Games and really, really enjoy it. The similarities with Battle Royal I'm perfectly happy with, I love that book/film. It's great to see it re-imagined. But the Hunger Games film... why... I.. Fuck you Hollywood. Fuck you.

I never expected a clone of the book, but the way they dumbed down something which really didn't need ANY dumbing down.. I am confuse.

Ok, as I write this, I am reminding myself that there were good parts to the film and it wasn't all bad. If you read the book and are going to see the film, prepare yourself. If you watched the film and thought it was good/had potential, please read the book. It's an easy read and easily enjoyed.

Yea, I'll give the book a quick go when I get a chance. The movie was alright.. felt it really pulled its punches. Granted, the book may do the same. I'm not just talking about violence either. Everything's just a little.. easy.

I didn't think it was dumbed down. The movie does pull punches, the book does not.

The problem in the movie was they worked hard to cover as many important events as possible. The problem with that, was the fact they didn't delve deeper into any of those events.
Relationships, violence, intensity, survival... they could have chosen any of those, delved deeper and come out with a more compelling experience.

I can't really find any other fault with the film. Acting, cast, story, were all good.
Everything was more meaningful if you read the book though because you filled in the blanks they left out. Which I guess is how most book to films go... but if you didn't read them I feel you might not know what's going on at times.

so, is this another book series, authored by a woman is now a "old cat lady"?
Or what? I'm getting mixed reports. Looks like it could be cool

Honestly, I think they (people with movie making knowledge) should quit the book series thing.

Make up something and not something that resembles the latest book to movie sensation.

Society revolts on future government. Society fails and gets an annual punishment of The Hunger Games = battle to the death in various arenas controlled by the game makers.
This is a future America, and NYC is the Capital (the govt/high society). The rest of society lives in ghetto's enslaved.
Girl and boy get chosen, set out to start a revolution against said govt and end the games.

1st book is similar to Battle Royale, 2nd and 3rd aren't, and as the story continues the games become a small part of the story.
The 1st movie seems to be making the games a small part of the story early on.

Seen the movie, and it wasn't a let down.

Because I had low expectations anyway.

It... It was just pretty boring. The people in the capitol looked like they belonged in Whoville, and not wherever the fuck it was meant to be. Shitty CGI Dogs are shitty and bad characters are bad.

Oh and what kinda shitty name is cat-ness.
