2011-07-12 21:07:54 Radeon HD4890 5.1 Audio via HDMI (Windows 7)

Ive just installed this card but cannot seem to get anything better than Stereo to appear as an audio option in Windows 7, I have all the latest drivers but cant seem to get it to work.

The product description says it can handle up to 7.1 so i cant understand what the problem is. Anyone have any ideas?

You probably need to select 5.1 for your speakers at the control panel. I would think manual has some guides too what to do.

OK so this is what I am meaning.



Right click the speaker icon and select playback devices. Then select the hdmi or ati or whatever it's named on that playback page and check out the configurations.

Oh maybe Ati has some settings on that Ati control center. I am not sure since I haven't used Ati card since the 9800pro series :P

Yeah, I'd expect to see those options available but unfortunately they dont exist on my W7. Here are the only options I get :(

Well hmm. I dunno maybe try to download and install the ATI HDMI Audio Device again from here: http://www.realtek.com/downloads/downloadsView.asp...

Strange that Vista/7 driver can only be found from Realtek site when XP driver is at Ati site :S

It might be because it's a digital connection.
You'll only get 5.1 or 7.1 if the material is encoded for it, otherwise all you get is stereo. I know that's the same for other digital connections.

My HDMI setup only shows that Stereo option as well, and my optical connection greys out the configuration button altogether.
I guess that's just the way it works, unless you choose an analog connection.

When you run digital surround material, is it coming through all speakers discretely?

Yea, I don't have any direct input, but that makes sense. The HDMI output is expecting your receiver to do the 5.1 decoding.

I have both a digital connection and an analog connection hooked up at the moment, so I can switch back and forth as necessary.
I like the analog with music since you can force the surround... games too.

For movies, though, I'll use the digital connection for true Dolby and DTX.
