Every year, it is the same story, we go to Cologne, capture as much footage as we can, but in the end, we don't get to try many games on the showfloor. Sometimes though, we managed to find a free controller and we selfishly take a bit of our precious time to play ourselves. That's how I ended up playing both Fifa 11 and its main competitor PES 2011. Our quick impressions inside.
FIFA 11
What a strange idea from EA to forbid us to film their games, preventing us from showing you high quality footage of Fifa 11. Much like in every new installment of the franchise, the developers of EA Vancouver did their best to improve last year's formula and fix the main problems that were pointed out (in particular the stupidity of the goal keeper), they added new animations and put a lot of effort in the modelling of the players. As a result, the game is very polished and smooth, the contacts between the players are even more realistic than before and it is a lot easier to use your body to protect the ball. Last but not least, shooting also feels more natural and you won't always shoot for the stars anymore - literally.
In such a short amount of time, it is however close to impossible to check the impact of the new features, like the Personality + for example. Overall, playing Fifa 11 looks quite similar to Fifa 10, which is not a bad thing considering how great it was. Don't worry though, the game is I think just as good as it was expected to be, if not even better. That being said, I do not think it would be fair to say anything more as I really had little time with the game. It is then safer to wait until the release of the demo on September 16, so everyone can see for themselves and share their feelings.
PES 2011
After a few matches on the beta the day it was released, I confess my expectations about this year's PES dropped enormously and I really thought that Gamescom would confirm my first impression. I had indeed little hope that I could be pleasantly surprised, so when I took the controller I was doubtful to say the least. Graphically speaking, PES 2011 is no major improvement on last year's installment, but then again, PES 2010 actually looked good at the time, especially when it came to character models and faces. The new animations they have been bragging about clearly show a huge step forward though I'm pretty confident the nitpicky gamers will still find a few things that just do not feel right. At least, it won't be necessary to put the game in slow motion in replay mode to actually realize that the animations looked good - oddly enough, they did not in normal speed mode. Talking about speed, the game is now much slower, which makes it more realistic to look at.
Therefore, you are obliged to rely on passing a lot more if you want to get close enough to gain a goal. And the good news is that the passing system has been improved a lot in PES 2011 as you can know put the ball exactly where you want it. You won't be able to blame the old automatic passes anymore, now you will be fully responsible for what happens. Some might be a little worried, thinking that this is going to make the game too complicated but it is really not. It does not take long before you can do what you want. The first passes are a bit tough, sure, but you won't need to practice for hours to do nice things with the ball. Shooting - one of the strengths of the franchise - is as good as ever but you cannot just do it from every position. You must pay even attention to where you are and where the defenders are if you want to have a chance to shoot correctly.
The area of the game that still needs some polish is the collision system between players. This indeed still lacks the realism and natural touch of Fifa's. Don't get me wrong, there have been some improvements too, but sometimes you get stuck because your player hits another player and he just stops. Dribbling is not that easy either because the inertia of the players makes it harder to control them, so it requires some getting used to before you can feel at ease. It might be an issue for some of you, which is why I think it is worth mentioning. I won't say anything about the sound effects (commentary, crowd etc) since it was difficult to hear anything on the showfloor but let's hope they did better. There was definitely some room for improvement there. This first contact with PES 2011 was actually really positive - against all odds - but we will need to have a proper - and longer - hands-on to really judge of the quality of this year's edition.
PES 2011 looks awesome when you view a distance shot as they're lined up about to kickoff, the lighting and pitch textures are phenomenal and it looks like a real game, sadly as soon as things start moving it shows itself up completely as the PES of old, and don't get me started on the player's faces, yuck! EA started with the 3d modelling 4 or 5 Fifas ago and they kept meeting the ridicule of "PES' player face likenesses are way better" now time has really caught up and the Fifa faces look amazing whereas the PES faces look like Hannibal Lecter sliced the face off some famous footballer and stuck it over his own face, you can even see the joins, looks terrible.
It's Fifa again for me but I'm still fuming about the bastardisation that was 10's MM, sadly it seems the new "Career Mode" is nothing new for fans of MM, sure if you liked BAP then the new CM is awesome but for those like me who only played manager mode then 11's CM is going to be a let down.

why do you say that? the CM is a totally new mode to MM. the did everything all over again
you can still play as a manager only, you know that right

But it's not a new mode, it's a new name for two old modes combined. They combined BAP and MM, removed 3 or 4 things from the old MM and added a couple of new minor things (like players now requesting transfers), and yes of course I know I can still be the manager, the point is that the "new" mode is only a new and exciting improvement for those who're into BAP, for us manager mode fans it's a let down because they've removed a few things and added only a couple of minor things.
Just a message for GangStarr, I'd like as well to take the two games but it's hard to become really good at one of the two if you switch regularly from one to another :-/
My position for now is that I really did not like PES 2010 and enjoyed FIFA 10 despite the different bugs I encountered.
So I have a little preference for FIFA 11, but I'm still looking forward to try PES 2011 and see what it's worth, then take the one I prefer, as usual :-)

they started it from scratch..
what new things you want? also what did they take out :S the fact that it is day by day now is a big enough improvement for me lol (instead of match by match) so i can have more chance to make transfers. being able to see leagues from other nations as well is a bonus
also the interface looks really nice

If you ever played real soccer and call Fifa a realistic soccer game....then you must be joking. It's the most unrealistic soccer game ever because the shooting system is totally crap. The players celebrate like a bunch of monkeys and generally this is not soccer, this is something like soccer but not quite there. The only thing that keeps it (Fifa) alive to compete with PES is the FIFA brand and rights, and if another publisher pay more and take away the Fifa rights from EA ........it's GAME OVER man because without the rights the game is simply mediocre. Fifa better than PES?? Yeah right, in your wildest dreams......maybe.

Because saying that one game is crap and that X is better than Y is not going to make this thread a pleasant place where civilized people can simply discuss nicely.
This is my opinion not everyone will agree and i'm sure that there are other opinions but that doesn't mean i can't say whether a game is good or not for me. This won't make the thread unpleasant, i've seen other threads where people are really going at each other for even more irrelevant stuff.

there was always going to be posts claiming "x is better than Y" to be fair.. when you've created a thread directly comparing your time with the two games.
Probably would of worked better as two seperate threads.. they'll always be people shouting ones better than the other regardles, but i do think this invites it more.
I'm actually quite looking forward to getting my hands on the PES demo this year..it's look and "feel" isnt usually the main failing of it for me, it's the multiplayer. So i hope thats alot better in this years.

It's not a comparison for God's sake. It's just two damn soccer games and it felt more practical to put them in one article instead of having two separate and small ones. I guess I should have known better with soccer fans. It's about giving you my feelings on both games so you have a first idea of what game you might prefer. It's not about saying that X is crap because Y kicks ass and vice versa.
By the way, we are going to make a F1 2010 and GT5 article as well, so you know, it's not because we want to compare both games... Though again, with racing game fans... -_-'

For a start the games FOOTBALL!!! we all need to get out of the habbit of calling it soccer when it's survived century's as football.
And though you wrote it as an impressional piece you were ultimately comparing the two through your experiences with them.
"The area of the game that still needs some polish is the collision system between players. This indeed still lacks the realism and natural touch of Fifa's." - as an example.
I don't care either way personally, but you couldnt of expected anyless than you have a list of bullet timed messages filling up the thread.
With F1 and GT5 i wouldnt expect the same as they're not in direct competition with one another (theres no clashing of fanbase there). But would you of made a shared thread of Forza and GT? i don't think so. Why? cause it invites comparrison..which invites little fanboy slanging matches.
^Exactly, sure, this is the internet and when it comes to stuff like this whether you include both games in one article or not it's going to cause a stir either way but putting both these games in one article is always going to make it alot worse.

Well sorry for not accepting fanboys, however inviting this thread might be for them. I think that such people are just pathetic and brainless for the most part. I chose to write this short article, which is why I think I'm perfectly entitled to decide what may be said or not in the comments. Call me a tyrant, fine by me but Gamersyde is our website, we make the rules. ;P
Should it continue along the same line than the first series of posts, then I think I'd rather see the thread closed.
Honestly, I don't see why I wouldn't put Forza and GT in the same article either. I don't give a damn about the system on which you can play the game, or in the case of PES and FIFA, which one is going to be the best this year. I do believe that players should be happy to see either games turn out great because you do have a choice in the end as to which game you're going to play.
There is a difference between saying that you like one game because you think that it corresponds to what you expect from the genre (and say that you prefer the shooting system of PES over FIFA's for example) and saying that the game you don't like is crap and the people who like it are just stupid. Now if that's too much to ask here, maybe we should not talk about games such as PES, FIFA, GT, Forza, God of War, Gears of War etc.

It's a good place to be for that. A lot of indie companies and big names. Irrational, Harmonix, 2K, etc. Doesn't hurt that Penny Arcade has their expo here every year either (1 Hour ago)

@Tinks: For me, my big take-away was software familiarity. BA in Media Arts and Animation. I'm actually moving to Boston to try and get in the gaming industry. Better late than never!! (1 Hour ago)

Indeed. The most important aspect of school for art students is the community. Artists need a community to feed off of and grow from. They also need those people to get jobs, show in galleries, etc (2 Hours ago)

It's just like any other school really. It's what you make of it as a person. Dick around and see how far you get after you graduate. And like most majors you can get a job without the college degree. (2 Hours ago)
