I'll beleive this when I see it. I have seen multiple games while in developement for Xbox 360 and Xbox1 brag about having large numbers in multiplayer games. Very few have lived up to their promises. Star Wars Battlefront, and BFMC are just a couple that I know of that support more than 16. I'm betting they scale this back to 24 or 16 by the release, you never know though. Also on a side note... remember with the original Xbox, that Unreal Championship had its own servers for hosting, do or does any 360 titles do this ( I think Test Drive Unlimited does this)

Frontlines brings 64 person multiplayer

The latest issue of Game Informer has a spread on Frontlines: Fuel of War, developed by Kaos Studios. Announced last April, Frontlines: Fuel of War is a military FPS featuring vehicular combat and advanced weaponry. The biggest tidbit of information, however, is revealed in the game's description. Should you walk by a copy of Game Informer in your local grocery store, flip to page 72 and focus your eyes directly under the title: "Up to 64-player via Xbox Live." You may be compelled to rub your eyes and unleash a hearty "whaa?" It's understandable. So there you go, from some of the same people that brought you Battlefield 2 comes 64 player madness.

It's the Desert Combat team. They did miracles with the Battlefield 1942 engine so I can see them doing miracles with UE3 and XBox Live!

Because most games you need to use your own connection there should be dedicated servers like PC games.

64 player bound to be a dedicated server so good news. :)

Didn't Black Hawk Down on Xbox support that many? Or some war game I don't remember. Maybe it was like 32 players, I don't remember.

Dedicated servers? They HAVE to if they're talking about this player size. Maybe they don't have to--but if they want to assure good games they do.

Frontlines has the potential to be the best shooter this year, easily. If anyone can make a better battlefield it's these guys--and if it weren't for the way EA and DICE handled BF2 it would easily be my favorite shooter ever.

It really wouldn't be very hard to support large games on Xbox live if they had dedicated servers, not running off of Xboxes but rather dedicated server software. Even running dedicated servers off of your own Xbox is a good start--but most people don't have the bandwidth to be serving 64 player games that well anyway.

I'll most likely be playing this on PC, but KAOS is promising that this will be the same game on consoles, not some toned down port. Regardless of player size, this is one to watch. BF2 scales beautifully between 16 and 64 players..I expect the same from Frontlines.

Chromehounds, Saint's Row, Phantasy Star Online, FFXI, Test Drive Unlimited, Battlefield:MC, PGR3 and Burnout Revenge all use some kind of server attached to Xbox Live to provide some sort of functionality. There are probably more, that's off the top of my head.

These range from persistent campaigns (Chromehounds), gang matchmaking (Saint's Row) to other features like Gotham TV, Save n Share (PGR and Burnout respectively). Plus the paid MMORPGS's as you would expect.

They have a program for it but I'm not sure how viable from a financial point of view dedicated servers on a MASS scale would be on Xbox Live. Yes, we pay for Live but it's the developer who would have to invest in the servers and I don't know if they get a cut or help with running them, they're just co-located.

Update: An inside source reports to us that the information in Game Informer is a misprint. Matches over Xbox Live will be limited to 32 players. The PC version, however, should support 64 players online. Too bad, though 32 is nothing to sneeze at.
Still not bad! And as I've mentioned previously, Battlefield 2 scales brilliantly between 16 and 64 player maps--and these guys have a lot of history with that game. So hopefully we'll see the same action here! 32 player maps in BF2 are plenty large, so don't think that this means you won't be getting a big piece of the action.

I love big team battles on live.
I would also like some body to design a lock in feature to stop the quiters though.

Take one 360, add some chopped PS3, stir in some Wii, a sprinkling of DS Lite. Enjoy :)

Well, most PC games don't suffer much from this. If you've got a 32 slot server, auto balanced or not, one person dropping from a 12v12 pub isn't a huge deal assuming someone else can join in their place when they drop.

Since this is basically a PC game being tailored to a multiplatform enviroment, I'm hoping it more or less works like a PC game. I also hope they add party features on Xbox live though, to make it easier to get the most out of that enviroment.

I have to say 64 player PC games are complete bullcrap, they rarely ever achieve their goal. There was a real good article about this in EGM or Game Informer, a couple of months ago.

64 players isn't bullcrap in Battlefield 2. Commanders, squads, maps that scale based on player size and better communication take care of that. I expect that this game will be managed very well too. The DC team actually worked on BF2--DICE beta tested many of BF2's concepts in the Desert Combat mod, even. Frontlines is like thier very own sequel to a franchise that they do not own but they certainly helped create.
