why do EA do this? put all their stuff on the analogue sticks? for boxing it worked great, but then they destroyed def jam with it (amongst other horrible design choices). wont this lose out on tricks due to the limitations of a single analogue stick?

i love it. couldn't go back to using buttons for boxing, that worked great. and this also looks great aswell. i remember wondering why tony hawk's never used the flick of a stick to ollie.

i'm sure buttons or triggers are used for grabs or tweaks, this is just for flicks and movements.

I hate it. I think they're eventually going to tank several popular franchises by overusing the right analog stick. Bring back my buttons, please. Seems oversimplified and just.. boring. Plus those analog sticks are never going to match the response time of the face buttons. No wai.

you're living in the past my friend. Button bashing days of Street Fighter are over. Instant response time isn't nessesarily a good thing. Punches in Fight Night shouldn't be instant. They should be as fast as you can swing the stick. So as you get tired, your fighter gets slower. Also, i loved only going half way in a punch to fake it, then swinging the other way to catch the oppenent off gaurd. Can't do that with buttons.
Bravo EA

Well I don't see that as living in the past.. your boxers actually get tired in that game anyway -- and you can use the face buttons! Fight Night may be the exception but it aint the rule. I just don't like the current direction they're headed, simplifying everything in a game down to a movement of the analog stick. It's imprecise and it's simple -- something that may work fine for one game, while failing another title completely.

Fight Night is fine and all, but it's no replacement for a traditional 3D or 2D fighter either. Those days really aren't in the past anyway.. I don't see Fight Night on the roster @ Evolution, and people don't use the EO controls for CvS2. I can't imagine a fast paced fighter (which compared to FN, they're all fast paced) with purely analog controls. Shit, in DOA3 people turned off the analog face buttons because they took away from the overall experience.

So yeah, good for some games, not for others. If this is too simplified I'll find myself going back to Tony Hawk. Not really bashing FNR3 or whatever.. seems like a fun game for some people (never could get into it myself, but I have friends that love it) and the controls were pretty original/innovative for the genre.. but I just don't see room for that to spill over into every sports game they make.

I fear for the future of SSX.

Looks good. I like what I see. Simplicity of control is why Street Fighter will always be a better, more intuitive fighter than Mortal Kombat. Moving the sticks in a more intuitive motion for the trick you are trying to pull off, is as natural an idea (as you can get with a standard controller) as swinging a faux racket to play tennis (ala Wii Sports). Anyone who actually skates is going to love this, as you are attempting to replicate motions that are 2nd nature to skaters, with the analog sticks - it engages the right side of the brain that handles the same actions in real life and will probably allow for more immersiveness. If done right, it should beat out button mashing any day of the week, not to mention breathe a very much needed and long overdue breath of new life into a genre that pretty much died a long time ago - just no one told Activision.

of course you cant use sticks for all games, especially DOA type games, but for SKATE... perfect. control scheme looks great, and i love the steep learning curve. this is all about making a kick flip to grind not an easy thing. no super combos like Tony Hawk's.

bye bye tony hawks, the thumstick control is pure genius.
in real skating the action of poping an ollie is to slam your tail down and slide your leading foot up the board and at the last moment flick the front of the board .
in skate the "same" kinda action is replicated in the sticks rather than pressing A to ollie
and X to kickfilp and B to grab...
the fluidity of the thumbsticks is whats needed in a skate game because skating is all about the fluidity of motion of your rught foot and left foot.
and i think EA have nailed it , and i have skated for the past 25 years

@ grift...i guarantee you wont be going back to playing tony hawks after you sample SKATE......!

Guess I need to play it to believe it. In the end I don't expect much of a learning curve either though -- I expect this to play out like a terribly simplified version of the alternative. Since that's what it is doing to loads of other EA sports games. I look forward to the demo as well..

I'm sorry but I don't think twiddling your thumbs is anymore like real skating (or fighting, or whatever) than pushing buttons. Plus.. what does it really matter if it's more realistic.. it's a video game. If you want realism.. just go outside. :P

You just broke my sarcasm meter :P

And you're right.. realism has its place in gaming. Even a skating game.

I'm still not sure I believe that binding everything to analog stick movement helps reach that goal though.. I do not believe that this will be any closer to the real thing (control wise) than Guitar Hero is to playing guitar.

i'd give it a chance. The first Fight Night pretty much got rid of all the competition because of the revolutionary controls. And i think SKATE could do the same. cant wait to pull off a pop shove it the way it shows on the vid.

Was there really a lot of competition for the boxing genre anyway? I will give it a chance though.. I haven't written it off yet. My only point was that I don't like this.. all analog direction that EA is heading with the majority of their sports titles. I think it's a mistake.

I think it's a mistake.
They're trying to revolutionise how we use the regular dual analogue control pad. It works great, they're selling loads of copies because of it and i have started buying and getting excited about EA games. Where's the mistake?

It's only going to work for a small scope of their software, but you can see its influence across the board.. which is where I think the mistake is. I don't think FN was a mistake -- but I think this becoming a direction for all of EA's Sports titles is.

Well they spoiled me with NHL 07 and FNR3, just made it so hard to go back to buttons now :(

I think it's the same situation with Skate.

I personally like the idea of using the analog sticks that way, though I agree that EA shouldn't use this method all the time just because it turned out to work perfectly for FN, but I do think it would work perfectly for Skate.

Also for the record, Def Jam failed horribly not because of the analog sticks thing, but because of pretty much everything else.
I'm still fucking pissed off about that, they really messed up a great game by trying to be "innovative".
So in that regard, I can relate to GriftGFX's scepsis...

Just like the other gameplay vids I've seen of this game it's disappointing.
The graphics are not all that great and the animations are not convincing either.

Atleast we got to see some cars and population going on, but it's all just very unpolished.

So far, not impressed...
