Can't wait for this game. Kind of bummed out about the whole point and click exploration thing, but eh.

WTF!!

However, any initial rush of excitement at the possibility of seeing Square innovating in the genre they helped define quickly dissipated upon watching the first two of three Last Remnant videos. While the opening sequence of the game was technically solid, showing a young androgynous boy rushing through a forest looking for a friend before witnessing a huge-scale battle scene, it was also based firmly in Lord of the Rings cliché, armour-bearing, boulder-throwing monsters et al.

WTF!!

o travel between locations the game employs a Fire Emblem-style cursor that the player uses to select firstly which location on the world map to travel and then which part of town. This, perhaps worryingly, implies that you won't be able to walk from location to location through the environments - something many gamers have come to expect from their modern RPGs.

WTF!!

Obviously it's early days but graphically the lighting was rudimentary and the textures on the ground of a low quality.

:) AHHHHHHH!!!

Until, that is, the Battle System Director Hiroshi Takai, took centre stage and talked through an astonishing gameplay movie of the game's central conceit: large scale battles. The fight we were shown took place on the huge plain first seen in the game's opening movie. Takai insisted that there are to be no random battles as each fight will be on an 'unprecedented scale' in which new enemies can join in fights to bolster their allies numbers enlarging the battle's geography.

During combat the camera swings and lunges with cinematic flair circling all the involved characters as the player inputs various moves. Attacks seem to be a complex mixture of macro directions (for example one group of mages targeted a group of enemies marching on top of a cliff in the distance wiping them out in one spell) as well as micro management and even Quick Time Event-style against-the-clock button presses.

Takai explained how morale in your squads can ebb and flow as the battle develops and how, as enemies group together to fight you with reinforcements, what looked like a straightforward fight can turn nasty. At one point the enemy squad summoned a huge dragon -a dramatic move which the main character countered by calling upon a gigantic clockwork Cyclops to fight alongside his team.

What's difficult to express in words is quite how effective the camera is in drawing the player into the action. The sequence was clearly a recording of somebody playing the game and yet the game still managed to communicate much of the cinematic drama seen in the close up battlefield scenes in movies such as Gladiator and 300. With dynamic audio shifting to match the action on screen this appears to be an extremely significant and dramatic development in RPG battle systems.

IF TRUE this game is dead to me. Seems to me like they're trying to avoid a ps3 single disc game and a 360 multi disc game. Screw that.

To be honest everything else is going to have to be pretty damn impressive for me to even consider getting this now.

Wow some of you are drama queens.

It's nice to have a world map that you can explore i agree, but it isn't that bad.

It's like basically having an airship from the word go :P

As long as the story is good and it has plenty to do in the towns/villages i look forward to this.

The dynamic camera sounds good also, one thing i will say though, is if 360 owners don't support this game, then don't expect to see many other SE projects on the 360.

Yea thats kinda true jolli lol if the game doesn't receive support Square might never jump in again or will they?

Nonetheless if its good it'll sell the way it deserves to. Wanting more square support I might buy it regardless, but it better be good :)

Hmm totally missed that gladiator and 300 comment =P

I suspect other square enix 360 projects will be Star Ocean 4 exclusive. Kingdom Hearts 3 exclusive (yea I'm crazy =P) and some other random less important title (or is it ?)

I agree with Jollipop here. I'm not really looking forward to it as on my top most wanted list, but I am looking forward to playing it.

and yea, if you want more support from SE, this is probably the only chance they will be giving. If sales aren't that great, probably expect nothing more from them in the 360 camp. Outside of maybe another sub-par MMO.

The real problem is PS3 and its userbase which doesn't seem to buy games too much. Last Remnant (if it's a good game and it probably won't be) should be fine if Square Enix releases the game at the right time (meaning - not next to heavy Microsoft's hit)

I guess the point and click exploration thing wont be so bad as long as you have plenty of room to move around in at each area. With their emphasis on large battles there would have to be.

Yea they should avoid 360 heavy hitters, but I suspect they'll probably run into fable 2 for some odd reason.

Well i know which i would sooner buy, not everyone is a MS die hard.

But then i suppose there aren't many SE die hard fans with 360's either.

What is a 360 heavy hitter, surely this is different for everyone, I would say Blue Dragon and Lost Oddysey, others might say , Halo 3 and Mass Effect.

It's a matter of opinion really.

Ah the West vs East argument again. please let's not go there. Not everyone bought the 360 for Halo 3 and mass effect or Gears, I personally bought it for Blue Dragon/Lost Odyssey with other third part titles being the cherry on top. Other might disagree and that's natural :D

I see Fable 2 being a Fall '08 release, honestly. Which should be going up against my baby Lightning(Final Fantasy XIII). Times like these where I wish I didn't destroy my Delorean :/

If I don't have a PS3 by then, I will sell Alimokrane and my younger cousin(chick) for one. I can be reasonable, not asking for too much.

If the games turns out to be another generic JRPG then NO it wont sell well in the West, if the game turns out to be a stella game then YES it will get supported with sales bigtime..

At the moment its way to early to say.. i'm all for action/rpgs turnbased or not, as long as its Great all-round.

Well FF12 was very generic and that has sold well, so did Dragon Quest 8.

So i don't agree with your thinking, however i will say that any Japanese game will have a harder time selling on the 360 than on the PS3.

It's small thing like like this, which allowed the PS2 to sell so well over the Xbox.

Well, those are kind of exceptions. Those are the big 2 SE franchises, they will sell regardless of how generic they are(which they are). Hell look at how many FFX sold, and that game was garbage. Bring it Bitches!

This is a new IP, yes from SE, but new IP nonetheless. I'm not saying it couldn't sell well, but assuming it will is reaching a bit. However, it could sell ok on the PS3 with people picking it up to tide them over till FFXIII is released. We will see.

Exactly its a new IP!
As i said if its a great game it will sell well in the west, if not then it wont simple..
LO we have seen and heards loads, and allot of people are impressed so good sales hell yeah, BD likewise so it should also sell well... ES there is no way in hell i see this selling well on the 360.

Both Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey will sell over a million no questions asked.

Yea I'm very worried about how well eternal sonata will sell. I actually don't expect it to do more than 300k in the usa. Hopefully from combined territories it can do atleast 500-600k.

Yeah but those who say Halo 3 and Mass Effect are the hard hitters will most likely never have heard of this game.

I say BD,ME,LO,F2,Halo3 are all heavy hitters to the crowd they appease to; either wway though I think all those games are my type of games.

Well anything over 500k is sucessful, i don't think Blue Dragon will do much better than Eternal Sonata, once i would have said yes, but now not so much.

Lost Odyssey will sell because many people want it to be something it isn't. (A western RPG)

People are not that STUPID jolli!!, they wont spend £50 on a game the WANT to be like something else, there will be plenty of videos/interviews and previews/reviews that will enable all to see what kind of game it turns out to be before they buy it.
