,” Itagaki says. “I look at Heavenly Sword and it seems really half-assed, because it’s asking you to do all these button-timing sequences but you are not getting much payoff from it.”

I can say that NG is one cheap ass AI game for sure, there I said it.
I for one love Heavenly Sword, one of the reason I bought it, so its not half-asses, its "limited" :P.
But yeah all this bashing against DMC4 and now HEavenly Sword, lets see what the hell he is going to do with NG2.
At least other companies made a effort to twitch the gameplay quite a lot, so Itagaki needs to add quite a lot cool things to its gameplay!
TGS!!

@Sath
To be fair, he never really bashed DMC3/4, that was Yousuke Hayashi, the director of NG Sigma.

COD 4's pre-alpha stage looks better than most game's gone gold stage.

Thing is though that Itagaki seems to really confuse direction with progress. It's weird that he doesn't complain about Virtua Fighter, but at the same time it's the most revered fighter like.. probably ever.. so I guess there's a limit to even his arrogance. However, I remember his comments back when VF4 came out and Sega went back to flat arenas with clear ring outs. Itagaki's comments sounded a lot like DOA with its elaborate arenas was the *future*, and that while he respected what Sega was doing they were essentially "stuck in time".
The same thing is true now with Ninja Gaiden. Team Ninja has taken a certain path with it, having a very controlled environment, limited numbers of enemies and having the combat and interaction with one enemy be very sophisticated. Instead of recognizing the merits in having larger quantities of enemies and having to dispatch them all without taking damage, he immediately dismisses that as "old".
It's once you realise this that he doesn't sound so much like a prick anymore. Or, rather, he still sounds like a prick, but you realise how smart he is and how his ideas and opinion are pretty well founded. He steps in new directions while still playing very much by "hardcore" rules. No fluff, everything is circular and has risk/reward, everything is absolutely useful in a very arcadey Streets of Rage way, but it's applying a lot of modern philosophies to it.
He seems to look at games like Tekken and God of War and firmly believes that's the wrong way to make a game, and that's his springboard for making new ones that in his opinion are better in every way. I guess that's just how he works.
Anyways, Ninja Gaiden is IMO the best of its kind. So there's more weight to his words that way.
Now he also said “I’ve never played a good game where the developers put a big icon of the button you’re supposed to press onscreen,”
Which tells us he doesn't like Shenmue nor RE4...WTF?!?!?

but ok then, he's praised Virtua Fighter too on different occasions, even said there would be no DOA without it(duh!). Your move Shurlock.
and in DMC case, I haven't read a interview where he came out and bashed it. He always said it was fine, not really bashing, but not really praising either. The only one that took cheap shots publicly towards DMC was Hayashi from what I can remember.
