that brain sucker magot thing reminds me of that thing in starship troppers. only smaller obviously. does anyone know if those shadows cast by the tourch are real, or is it doing the doom 3 trick where its just like a floating translucent texture.

Sweet, they pushed some of the new graphic updates back into HL2, so HDR and soft shadows from dynamic light sources like the flash light--sweet. 60fps based on Gabes old comments. Cinematic physics look good as well... but it does seem like self shadows hit the cutting room floor. Overall still graphically pleasing and looks like a killer deal this fall.

Define real? Shadowmaps are textures. Doom 3 mainly used stencil shadows, but most games use shadowmaps. And there are a lot of shadowmap varieties on the market, especially when you look at various filtering techniques for soft shadows.

hard to explain. erm. you know the shadows in fear, that your player model casts when you walk past a light source. i'd consider that "real". it casts realistically on multiple surfaces. the ones in doom just looked like a black translucent texture floating a little above the thing actually "casting" it. i supose thats stencil shadows? to me it looked like this used the doom 3 method. not the fear method.

I've played only bits and sections of HL1 and HL2 on a friends PC, so this will be mostly new for me. Great Package... now this will be worth $60.
