Inifinte Undiscovery to be Multiple Discs as well

In a meeting with Hiroshi Ogawa, Director for Infinite Undiscovery, and Hajime Kojima, Producer for the title, IGN learned for a second time at TGS this year that a game coming to Xbox 360 would require multiple discs. This time around, it's Infinite Undiscovery. The two game makers couldn't say exactly how many discs the game would require as it is still in the middle of production, but they were certain that it wouldn't fit on a single DVD. They also weren't sure how long the game would last, but estimated 30-40 hours.
All the better if it means they wont be cutting corners with the game. The last comment though they make it look like this is a big problem for 360 titles of all genres. If jrpgs want to be multiple disc then by all means :)

It really isn't that big a problem these are japanese rpgs with a lot of CG afterall. But of course most people would rather convince themselves multiple discs instantly means the game isn't good. I mean afterall we've already heard developers sling the "this level alone takes up 2 to 3Gigabytes of space" line haven't we? Doesn't Lair's TGS 2006 level alone take up 2GB+ on the blu ray disc according to the devs? I wonder how that ended up working out for them. Maybe they filled the entire disc.

Only from PS3 exclusive developers.

These are multiple disc games so far

Blue Dragon
Infinite Undiscovery
Lost Odyssey
Rage
F.E.A.R. Files (though technically these are 2 games, its pretty much the same thing as the GTA Double pack)

That's 5 games confimed by the end of 2008, 5 games half-way through the consoles life is nothing, hell double it and its still nothing, especially since over half of them are JRPG's packed with FMV.

In terms of discs, 360's space situation is still better than the PSone and the Gamecube its 2nd and third year in.

Incidentally, MGS4 is shipping with its campaign and multiplayer on seperate discs, will the gaming world implode?

Very well said and 2 out of those 5 I likely wouldn't consider not because they are bad, but they probably aren't my thing.

Lost Odyssey pushes 60 hours + of gameplay and that thing fits on a single disc so it's obvious the CG is the biggest issue here, but its fine.

Ooops good job catching the mistake. Too much Lost Odysey on the brain :o

Really liked what I saw in the latest IGN vids. It's got me extremely excited. So many party members and performance seemed practically rock solid. I want to see a couple more things from the game, but judging from what I'm seeing so far I just may end up taking back what I said about the UE3 engine. I'm really impressed by what Mistwalker and Feel Plus are managing to do with the engine. You can tell those guys are really going places they are already, to me, one of the premier sources for japanese rpgs.

That's how I feel about it too..

I only will get worried when FPS, race, sport, and other actiongames are gonna require more then 1 DVD.. By that time a new gen Xbox will be out, so no worry..

Maybe HD-VMDs will solve the problem by the time IU is released.

New Medium Enterprises says that an 20GB VMD disc can be applied to a regular "off the shelf" DVD drive with just a firmware application.

http://www.primenewswire.com/newsroom/news.html?d=...

"NME's HD VMD PC technology will enable consumers to make their current PC drives compatible with VMD playback format through a simple download"

Microsoft would be foolish not to take advantage of that.

Yes but then that could end up with a lot of bricked DVD players, and would mean consumers having to upgrade before they play a game.

I guess its no different than what Sony do with the PSP though.

I've been obsessed with all Mistwalker titles since 2005 they ARE the reason I signed up on this site afterall :)

Also a blue dragon obsession lands you in bansville :D Plus I've already beaten the game (plan to do so again) Next major target is Lost Odyssey. Grim.. wtf no way... I didn't even think that was possible lol. Microsoft could easily include that very update right there on the game discs so people wouldn't have to download it haha.

Might be a pretty touchy situation though since Microsoft is heavily aligned with the HD-DVD camp. Still Microsoft HAS been careful to seperate games and the HD-DVD format so they could probably get away with using that for games.

Well i have to admit that if they said tomorrow that the HD add on would be for games aswell, I would def buy one, would give me 2 reasons to buy one.

Even though HD-DVD looks to be dying a slow death. :S

Thats what I thought as well until the recent Universal, Dreamworks stuff which gives an exclusive on the likes of Shrek 3, Transformers, blades of glory etc its looking pretty good for HD-DVD right now. Bourne Ultimatum would also be an exclusive and a number of others.

Not talking about reports im talking about what i see in my local stores and movie rental places.

Blu-Ray without a doubt has a better line up of titles and very few places even stock HD-DVD, anyway, this is about IU.

Not at all. HD-VMD disc technology's coding, operational standards and reading rates meet the exact same standards of existing DVDs and CDs.

The only difference between a DVD9 and VMD is the discs multi-layer structure. The red laser tech in a VMD player is no different than the 650Nm DVD drive in an Xbox 360.

This really could work out. We'll have to wait and see.

Well Microsoft and Sony use third party middleware tools and software all the time. This could be a similar deal. I see no reason why it couldn't work sounds very interesting, but will they do it :o

MS would be nuts to ignore this. Then again it isn't really a must, but I mean hey if it's there then why not?

Yes but before you said it would need a firmware update to work, any time you update a firmware there is a chance of it going wrong and rendering the hardware useless.
