looking good!

This has been pushed back a couple of times but latest word on this is September. Hence they have lots of development time left. The small section of the city available in the demo is alive and breathing and with so much going on, I guess that's why they're struggling with the frame rate. Nothing that won't be fixed though.
I was really impressed with the physics and explosions, the latter are on a par with GRAW easily. Shooting someone's tires out causes the car to swerve off the road realistically. It's possible to escape from the cops by popping the tyres and legging it!
Animations for jacking vehicles were quite amusing as well. In one, the drivers head is smashed against the wheel and then thrown out the car. When I did this it was into an oncoming SUV and the person went flying!
Customization will be a heavy part of this game. Character options aren't the same as say Oblivion but still pretty deep. Voice acting looks good too.
Like I say, lots and lots of time for Violition to polish this which can only be a good thing overall. The multiplayer/Xbox live component sounds awesome. Reckon the demo will hit in the summer :)

This does look great though, I just hope that there's a little bit more to it than gang violence :/ I'm definitly interested in how the mp component of the game turns out as well.
what was the control system like?
Did you get any information on missions?

This is one game in which I'll be taking a wait and see approach with because despite all the cool things like shooting out tires and all the other nice touches that weren't in gta I'm still not convinced this game will be anything more than a gta clone that merely showcases potential, but never fully exploits it. I don't think anyone expected this game to beat out the gta series, but atleast I hoped it would set a bar that gta4 would have to match or beat and as of now I don't even think it sets a bar that is beating gta3 or vice city much less san andreas. Its so far just seems to be taking advantage of the extra power awarded by a next gen console doesn't seem to be advancing the genre or setting itself up to be on gta's level and a huge part of that is due to the main character of the game not having a set role to play (like cj from san andreas.)
Games like this should be like a movie and the character needs a proper background and very important a voice acting role because without that its hard to get sucked into the experience.

but forget it, I'm going to tell valve to stop making games because they've never given gordon freeman a voice. that's why prey is so much better than half life and has a much better environment and story.
I think its much more crucial for the main character to have some sort of speaking role in a game like Saints Row. I mean its very possible that Saints Row could be a great success with the formula they have going currently, but gta has set a couple standards and it just makes things much harder to toss the basics out the window if you know what I mean. When I mention the need for the main character to have a speaking role I don't apply this to all games, but I think after gta it makes no sense for your character to not speak. I assume when people first started seeing Saints Row info everyone was wondering.. I wonder what the main character will be like in this game? What will his background be like? Then to find out he's just a no name that takes orders? Gordon in half life has an identity and a reputation, our guy in saints row has none from the get go, but then again I suppose thats what they are going for in saints row.

It is two games. the first game had no history and no speaking protagonist.
You can't say it's good because of it's "history" it's a quake/doom clone just like soaint's row is a GTA clone.
to say it has less to prove than saintsrow is something you can only say if you ignore reality. gordon doesn't have any identity and reputation. Gordon is just an average worker with a very boring job. That's it, that's all you get about him. complaining that the saints row character is a noname and gordon isn't doesn't even begin to make sense.
I'm sorry, were there twenty half life games before the original half life that I missed where they established the half life franchise and showed that half life, the first game valve ever made, didn't have anything to prove?
Half Life and Saints Row are 2 very different type of games... with a game like Half Life which has a great story with a goal much bigger than simply being the top gang you can get away with this stuff, but in a game like Saints Row... I don't see how you can get away with it when there have been 3 gta crazy successful gta games that have set a standard for how games in the genre or trying to be in the genre should have as standard.
Also Half Life is by no means a quake/doom clone far from it actually. Half Life has done many more original things than Saints Row is doing right now. At its core Half Life is much deeper than Saints Row is so Saints Row is more in need of a main character that speaks than half life is. There is no mystery about what the ultimately goal is in Saints Row, they've pretty much on the official website listed all the rival gangs you'll have to take down and listed particular people within each group that is of any significance. There are the expected traitors from your side, but does it go any deeper? Its rather simplistic so they need to help that by doing something more creative with the main character. I'd understand if he was completely incapable of speaking and that was apart of his character, but he's just a guy that doesn't talk.

In my opinion, Vice City and San Andreas just sucked compared to GTAIII. Too big, stupid tiers of weapons, RPG elements and tons of useless crap. The level design and story for GTAIII were just much better than VC and SA.
Saints Row takes care of the annoying weapon tiers by letting you choose what weapons you want to use, not forcing you to rifle through several tiers of weapons you don't give a **** about. Basically, Saints Row takes all of the fun stuff from the GTAIII trilogy, cuts out the bull**** and makes it "GTAIII clean cut" for you - while also adding on to what the GTA trilogy did and just doing a much better job of it.
Honestly, I don't know why a main character with no voice would be such a big deal for you - I mean you liked GTAIII right?
As for GTA, I would like to see them take Saints Row as a model of what GTA should become in the future.
Did you agree with me? Yes, No? Visit http://www.lebato.blogspot.com and see if we agree on something.
The whole voice ordeal is just one of the things I've come to expect after the last 2 gtas, but gta's story, character dialog always seems extremely well done and of course the saints row devs have some really talented actors helping out, but the game has yet to give me the gta feel I don't know what it is. Yea I actually LOVED gta3 and I think GTA 3 is one of if not the best in the series. When I think about Saints Row like I would GTA 3 I guess you have a very good point, but I pray they mix it up and its not a laundry list of crappy uninteresting missions over and over. I guess the issue is Saints Row just feels more petty gang violence than most GTA games ever did so I figured this game would benefit greatly from a vocal main character.
I hope it isn't all about petty street gang stuff its got to be awhole lot bigger than that and I hope it is, but the type of emphasis they put on the gangs I doubt it is... I also really dislike the floaty physics of the characters :/ I'm hoping there are a lot of really interesting missions that are mixed up. This game's success is seriously riding on what they do as far as character development goes. They better make sure all the key members of the other gangs are some great interesting characters.

As for character development, there are 4 very different gangs - each that work very differently. The game also has involvement in the politics with crime (Vice Kings and David Carradine's character from the Rollerz). It's easy to say that Saints Row doesn't have a deep story when you don't know anything about the game's story (as none of us have played it through yet). Sure we know a couple of tidbits here and there (you have a spy in the Rollerz and Troy will probably betray the Saints for the Vice Kings) - obviously the Saints take over Stilwater, but as you defeat the gangs it seems that they join your ranks, so that in itself is interesting because your enemies become your friends. I also like how you can choose which territories you can take over first or if you feel like taking over another territory while halfway through another one, it's possible; also, the whole game world is open for you at the start so you don't have to wait for bridges to be fixed 10 hours into the game.
I think the game has a broad enough spectrum of characters and plot elements for it to come even with, if not beat out GTA (the Hollywood actors said they were impressed with the script and said it was very smart, so that gives you an idea that it will in fact have some depth to it).

I'm not too interested in the story, but aslong as it'll be acted well, thats always a plus. I'm there for the gameplay. I watch movies for stories, I play games for games. When a game excels at both (like GTA) then its truly something to witness. But I'm not going to knock a video game for not being cinematic, but I'll praise one that is.
The physics are perfect to me. A little bit of freedom is good. I like seeing the pedestrians fly 30ft in the air when I hit them, or being stuck on my grill for a few hundred feet. That's entertaining. I've never worred about debris from an exploding car hitting me before, but now its something you've got to take into a consideration, and kinda adds to the cool. I can't think up a GTA-clone that ever did GTA as much justice as Saints Row has. I think for once Rockstar might have to look at what Violition has done and make a few minor adjustments.
