Games like NG, DMC, GoW, Bayonetta...etc. are focused on combat alot, hence action hack and slash, considering they all have weapons with blades were you hack and slash your enemies (more or less).
3rd person action hack and slash, hack and slash, action/adventure hack and slash, action hack and slash...pick any.
But games like Darksiders were its quite heavy with melee weapons, platforming and puzzles involved all at once, I say action/adventure games.
action games are usually considered to be the devil may cry style action, i've honestly never seen it be considered anything else.
there is no exploration, no platforming, no puzzles, it's all about the combat. (but i've said before that i'd say god of war was more action/adventure then an action game, since it does have traditional "adventure" elements, but i'd be going against the grain if brought that into the equation)
but to clarify since some obviously wont agree with the action genre being the likes of devil may cry, i'll just say god of war 3 looks better then anything out there that plays similarly (devil may cry, ninja gaiden, dante's inferno, bayonetta, etc etc)
Basically, I just see God of War as a very "noob friendly" version of far superior games (in terms of gameplay and design) like Ninja Gaiden or DMC. God of War simply has far better production values for those who are easily impressed by the pretty shiney stuff lol. God of War just is very over the top in terms of violence and scale and this seems to be very appealing to the modern gamer, for better or worse...
I'm not a huge GoW fan, but I can see why some would like it if for no other reason than the mindless violence and the highly accessable challenge level and combat design.
I personally just hate the fuck out of the Kratos character and that has always big a big turn off for me, though I have finished both GoW one and two and did really enjoy them. Just never thought they were anything nearly as special as some make the franchise out to be.
But I would say it's an action game for sure in the same category as DMC and NG. Button masher is a pretty vague term though?

God of War 1 and 2, whatever you try to prove by dissecting their combat, are AWESOME overall experiences with a load of variety both in terms of gameplay and visual themes, and it's the kind of thing where - once finished - you've been on a proper damn journey.
Apart from Zelda, that doesn't really happen anymore.

and I agree, in terms of story and scale, GoW is superior to NG or DMC. I just think, for me personally, the parts of GoW that are so freaking dumbed down keep it from being anything close to as great as NG or Bayonetta, in terms of an overall satisfying experience. GoW is a lot of cool bells and whistles, but not a lot of true substance. NG or Bayonetta, for example, aren't as much to look at but the true meat of the gameplay experience is far more deep, rewarding, and satisfying. IMO of course.
But I don't want to sound too critical b/c for the audience it's aimed at, GoW is a fantastic title that delivers a very cinematic and visceral experience few other games can match. So by no means am I trying to sound too critical of GoW. Just wanted to elaborate on what I meant.
School has me swamped as a mother fucker, but if I get the time, I'd love to play GoW when it comes out. Even if it's not my fav type of game, the presentation alone always makes it a fun experience. I just wish I didn't have to play as Kratos... hate that fucking twat.
You have to simplify the comparison beyond meaning if you want to pit them against one another, and I just don't see the point of doing that at all.
You might aswell compare combat mechanics in NG to Sands of Time.

Uncharted 2 killer???
I think i have stood in poo
I'm excited... there are news spreading that Crysis-2 will out-do Uncharted2's visuals, but what if something BIGGER to refer comes out before Crysis-2? (though in some places Heavy Rain has already done that) and yeah, GT5 will always be there, but don't you wonder what if the mighty deforming-world technology totally changed the art, cinematic and immersive capabilities of gaming world as represented in gow3? These questions do arise, and we keep watching something generation-defining from PS3 again and again... only few more hours to go :)
Oooh, Profound, isn't it?
