I wonder how long it will take for folks who play BTBs to purchase and adapt?

I've played Reach pretty much every night since it was released, but there's not a chance in hell I'm spending more money on it.

Considering how much Bungie cares for it's games after release, I kinda feel like the price for maps is more than fair.

I'm glad for the new maps, because Reach was seriously getting stale. But we all know Bungie ships some of its worse maps at retail. Or maybe they suck because they just pay their level designers in MS points, I forget.

No need to worry about that :)
We’ll make sure you get to play these suckers as much as humanly possible should you decide to plunk down 800 Microsoft points in support of our DLC Team’s efforts. Unlike the map packs of yore, we won’t only be offering a playlist specifically tailored for players with access to DLC. The haves and the have-nots can swim in the same pool and our newly retooled matchmaking algorithms will systematically segment the player base properly so you won’t have to worry about where you can get your next hit of new map smell. They'll be seamlessly incorporated into the already existing playlists as primary voting options.

Of course, for those who demand a DLC-only experience, we’ll blow the whistle and open up a VIP lap lane just for you. It'll be ready to go on day one. Details coming soon

Gametypes

* CTF
o All CTF gametypes should now have a player respawn of 10 seconds
o All Classic CTF gametypes now feature Flag At Home To Score and Touch Return
o Flag At Home To Score disabled for all non-Classic CTF gametypes
o Modified Flag Return and Flag Reset times:
+ 1 Flag on Small maps use 10 second return and 30 second reset
+ All other CTF gametypes use 30 second return and 45 second reset
* Assault
o Assault gametypes now have a player respawn time of 10 or 15 seconds depending on the map
10-15 SECONDS? What was the reasoning behind this bright decision? A week ago I had a Wraith in Hemorrhage, and I was nearly about to hit a double rampage when I finally got nailed. It was the respawn times and the fact that I had the opposition cut off from their flag base that made my rampage possible. They kept respawing to the far left and right of their base and were now desperately running towards it to get their respawns out of the open field were I was murdering them left and right.

With a 10-15 SECOND respawn time I could have rampaged for much much longer. Respawn times aren't fair right now as it is, 10-15 seconds is an eternity to lose your flag, lose respawning vehicles to opposition and generally enough time to completely lose control of the field to just a couple players with field advantage like I had in Hemorrhage.

I think this particular update is going to frustrate more than a few players.

Considering how much Bungie cares for it's games after release, I kinda feel like the price for maps is more than fair.
"They" obviously don't care much about the people playing it online.. Because if they did they wouldn't charge for a few more MP maps.. Charging for content like that only splits the online community into people who bought the DLC and the ones who didn't, they cannot play together at all times anymore.. It puts unfair pressure on people who play the game online with friends but don't really want to spend more money on it but are being forced because otherwise they cannot play with their friends anymore who did buy the content and play it.. It's all stuff that makes gaming less fun, but "they" don't care.. "They" only really care about their businessmodel of earning more money on games thru DLC..

And with they I mean Microsoft..

So you cannot blaim Bungie for it, it's the platform and online network owner Microsoft that's to blame.. Here's some old news about Valve (one of the very few companies that does understand how to care for it's games and fans online) and why their extra content had to be paid for on the Xbox 360: http://www.techspot.com/news/36141-valve-forced-to...
Thankgod nobody owns the PC (although Microsoft like to think otherwise sometimes it seems)..

You speak the truth Inflatable, but with the numbers that bungie is pulling, the segregation doesn't really have a dramatic impact. Well, it shouldn't. Halo 2-3 had some issues here, but they're rolling out map packs a little smarter this time to the playlists. I actually wrote a rant a while back for Phaethon's blog about the "real" cost of Halo 3. It's absurd. I can't believe people shell out $150 for the legendary edition and don't even get some sorta voucher for some DLC.

That said, I'll buy them. I don't want to jump in immediately, since I still sorta feel burned on Halo 3, but I might.

Since they're adding Forge World maps to the playlist for free, they've also improved the variety of free support too.

I don't care if the segregation has a dramatic effect or not, segregation shouldn't happen at all, periode.. Like I said it sucks for those people who don't want to spend more but have to to not fall outside the group online.. It shows no love at all for the people who bought and play your game online.. And it's not like they don't make enough money already from sales of the game itself.. So there's no excuse for charging for DLC other then greed (wanting to milk as much money as possible out of a market)..

Companies like Valve show how it should be done (on PC, on the consoles they cannot because of the monopolists MS and Sony).. With a company like that you have the feeling they really care about the people who buy their games and keep them alive online..

We gamers are to blame ourselfs aswell though, because we are the ones buying into all that paid DLC crap etc in big numbers, making it a working valid buisiness strategy.. But it's mainly companies like Microsoft monopolizing the online and offerings of DLC that give us no choice other to buy or get and play nothing anymore.. And it's all legal.. The sweet morals of capitalism..

Sigh, this again. So it's greedy to want to get paid for work they did outside the main product, but it's not greedy for you to expect it for free ?. Sure, they made a lot of money because they made a product people want. They could just stop making extra maps and be done with it. You act like they are arbitrarily bestowed their success by the masses, not that the company exchanged a quality product people wanted and thus reaped the reward. Anything outside of the original content(unless specified in some kind of agreement)you get for free is just a dev being cool, not something you earned for being a fan. It seems you are the one on shakey moral ground. Yawn...

I partly agree with the both of you, but Inflatable is generally more correct in what he's saying. On the one hand, you can't really expect extra content for a game and then not expect to have to pay for it; on the other however, the fact that it's being released so soon after the game shipped shows that they could quite easily have had it in the retail version - and that is greed, which I would assume is on Microsoft's part.

I've never agreed with paid DLC, especially map packs. I just perceive it as selfishness; essentially charging extra for components that could quite easily have been in the game from the beginning.

Unfortunately there are too many mugs out there who buy into it.
