ive never done this before, so i want good websites. im finding lots things there but dont know. some sites are outdated other new, some not sure

requirements (hardware)
good sites on how to build a pc
site i can buy hardware (better places than newegg)





anyone with experience can help

First think of how you are going to use your computer. Is it mainly for gaming, or do you want to do video editing? With that in mind you can start selecting the right parts for your build.

These are some handy video guides that show you how to build a pc step by step. It also gives you advice on what to buy for a good gaming pc.

Also, is there a specific reason you want to build it yourself compared to buying a pre-build desktop?
Especially if you want some of the top end stuff it's not gonna come cheap :-)

I pretty much always build my own PC's. It's fun, and it's easier these days than it's ever been before. Everything is so plug-and-play that you don't really need to know much to get the job done. I heavily recommend overclocking too, so finding a good combination of motherboard, ram, and CPU (and cooler) that can go beyond its stock speeds isn't a bad idea. You can get a lot more bang for your buck that way, but it's a little less newbie friendly.

Gonna hijack this thread real quick. Out of these cards what would be comparable to a 512mb 8800 GTS? A friend needs a new card.

What's his budget? The 8800 is pretty old at this point, you can get a card that outdoes it pretty cheap.

You can get a budget card for less than $100 (HD5550 maybe?) or a HD5750 for ~150. I'm really not too up-to-date on price:performance on low end cards, but this is a good place to do a little light research.

Jesus, I didn't even provide the link...basically he's looking to buy one of these cards. I'm just way behind on what's good these days and my friend would like something of similar power to my 8800.

9800GT is about the same performance as 8800GT. I would save more and get GTX 460 but it really depends what kind of CPU he has.
