I don't personally think there's anything wrong with Blue Dragon, since I haven't played it.. and I wouldn't have even said anything, if it weren't for that "too deep" comment. I just thought that was sorta ridiculous. Can't a critic disagree with someones opinion without being criticized himself?
Fact is 1up/egm doesn't have much credibility to me on their review for one because they can admit to playing dragon quest for 90 hours (a game I've played) and claim to not be able to stand blue dragon for any decent amount of time? There are many things from what I've seen in BD that are done better than Dragon Quest VIII. So whats the problem? I don't really need to answer that.
Look at what Edge had to say about Dragon Quest VIII
Fact is I've played Dragon Quest and Dragon Quest drags on and feels tedious at times even though I liked the game AND the game had random battles. Again these bad BD reviews its totally their opinion, but I reserve my right to call foul. Blue Dragon looks like an awesome game from what I've seen and played. There is no reason it shouldn't be getting reviewed as nicely as Dragon Quest did, but again it doesn't have the name so it gets no respect.
I already knew IGN gave BD a screwed up review when I saw they actually sounded annoyed at the fact that Lost Odyssey was also going to be turn based and asked about it in their latest interview lol. If FF13 released and was turn based just like Blue Dragon or Lost Odyssey not nearly as many reviewers would penalize it for that.

Something else I thought was funny is IGN's video review didn't at all look to me like the 79 game they reviewed it as. It looked a tad bit undeserving of such, but whatever I suppose. The minigames looked incredible too.

The fact is that critics DO force themselves through many a game they dislike. That's just part of what they do.. and rightfully so.
He's a very humorous character and I enjoy him everytime I've seen him in the game. That stands out to me for a number of reasons. If they thought Maru was annoying and I think he's an awesome character then who can say the rest of the opinions they have of the other characters can be trusted. Much less what they have to say about the story?

Blue Dragon is seeing some pretty harsh criticism from the reviewers. I can't say I can blame their views based on what I'm seeing in the market right now. Here we are on the verge of entering Q4 - the fall season - where we'll be seeing games like Project Gotham 4, Call of Duty 4, Halo 3, Mass Effect and other potential sales giants. Although I don't think the reviews are what will impact fans of the JRPG genre, I believe that with such anticipated titles on the horizon, the competition will be fierce.
I'm all for whats familiar and traditional when it adds some innovation. From what I can tell from the reviews, Blue Dragon is playing it safe, going tried and true, and marketing towards its core gamer group. Microsoft's first next-gen JRPG endeavor really was a chance for them to expand the market by catering towards not only towards JRPG fans, but to casual adventurers alike. I believe the recently released E3 2007 demo may have put off fans who were hoping that the game might take risks, and show that the genre had changed since they visited it on PS2.
And then there's the art style that a few, *like Grift for example* dislike greatly. It might have benefited Sakaguchi if he had gone with a more neutral character type than the Toriyama style. Chrono Trigger had a unique style to it besides being based on the Toriyama style, that lent itself to the more interesting visual theme at the time. In part, perhaps the limitations of the hardware actually IMPROVED the art design.
Lost Odyssey seems to be making strides in gaming altogether with it being the first Unreal Engine 3 RPG, as well as the first Japanese game released using the engine. I would be more confident in the game, as it seems to be taking a more Final Fantasy approach, that I believe Sakaguchi is more familiar with. In turn, I believe this form of "media confidence" will boost sales, combined with its visual appeal. The Xbox 360 user base really is a more hard core group.
In the end, I feel that Blue Dragon was ultimately a much needed step in the right direction. But thats in reference to the launch in Japan. I don't believe that it will result in the major success Microsoft and Sakaguchi had hoped for. I do believe it has the potential to sell well in the European and North American markets, simply because of devout followers like Optimus, Jollipop, and LEBATO*.
*lol
I do hope that this won't discourage buyers from making future purchases of 360s, believing that the platform just wasn't meant for them. Not at all. I believe we've just seen the beginning of what this genre was made for. It just needs to be retooled, and make strides in the areas we're seeing become more interesting and well received.

How do you sleep at night?
Ultimately I guess I don't really mind as long as I enjoy Blue Dragon thats the most important thing to me and nothing comes before that. It actually sold 350,000+ in Japan I think it'll do really well in the North America + Europe combined. Sure some may find certain aspects of the game boring, but I know I'll enjoy it greatly. I had a lot of fun with the demo.
Salarien believe me Lost Odyssey wont fair any better in reviews :) Suddenly being like Final Fantasy will be seen as a bad thing for the game (calling it that reviewers will call it an ff ripoff of sorts) It will receive a lot of flack for being turnbased and they'll say the characters are very boring and uninteresting. Reviews will be 7.5-8.2 Oh and 6 from both edge and EGM :D

sounded just like that
All joking aside, who cares what reviewers say. I sure don't. I may not be buying the game on day 1, due to being on a budget, but I'm still looking forward to playing it(rent). My only real gripe is the tech issues that plague the game(frame rate, screen tearing, etc.). Kind of mad that they had almost a year to fix those for the western release, and yet did nothing. Hopefully Lost Odyssey doesn't suffer from the same issues.

Delgado: HALLE what have i told you about bothering me when i'm playing Mass Effect!!! now get out and dont come back for 2 months!! (Slams door
Thing is with this thread is i see a lot of non JRPG fans coming in here giving their opinion based on a preview and a short demo which i find pretty ridiculous. (its like me giving my opinion on Halo 3 before i have even played it)
I don't think anyone should have an opinion until they have actually played say the first 10 hours (many people here won't do that), saying there is no character developement until disc 3 is way off, as with many JRPG's the first few hours of play involved adding new charcters to the party and getting used to the battle engine, this game is no different.
I don't see what the big deal is regarding character development (what does this mean ?) because the story is fast paced and always engaging, at least i found it to be.
At the end of the day if you are a JRPG fan then you will really like this game, if your not then you will probably dislike it.
