You can only pick the core background for your character such as spaceborn, sole survivor, earthborn, warhero (dont remember all the options)...etc. but its the same things you could pick in the first ME1 were they start telling your background according to what you picked.

Bah, PC version not for me then. I chose to spare that alien spider-like species in the first ME and I saved the Council from death, don't want any of those things to not be present in ME1.

I'm considering also getting the PC version, but since you obviously don't have your Xbox 360 save game, what the hell can you do? Can you actually make choices at the start of the game that make it in line with choices you've made in the first game?

I need you for that one Sath, since you're playing the game.
Yes i think you can. Heard at some point at the beginning of the game, you will have a chat with someone, and then your answers on that chat will determine your actions from ME1, if you didn't import a save game.

Now if you import a saved game during that chat, if you say something wrong about your previous actions you are corrected.

But i got here just the thing for everyone without saves from ME1 on PC.

Plenty of choices. Female Shepard, Male, Paragon, Renegades. It's on the details the choices taken, the level etc.

Pretty cool, considering we can change our class, and how our Shepard looks at the beginning of the game. :)

I hope that choices thing is true. That would save me bigtime.

Even if I wanted to go the pc route, there's just not a single save game out there that matches the choices I've made.

I found one that had just about everything to a t, but apparently did no romances. I remember romancing ashley. That makes all the difference in the world :)

I just beat the original. Just saw all the medals I missed out on... hopefully that can be excused for this sequel :p
I'm also tempted to start a new harder difficulty in Mass Effect 1 but am paranoid I'm going to overwrite the female character I made. Any tips?

You can't overwrite any character you've created. Each time you finish ME1 the game saves it for you. You can restart a new game anytime without worrying about a previous save being overwritten.

The trick with Ashley was not to try so hard, I learned that my second time around with her. After you've shown interest in her you really don't have to do press the issue, she'll come to your quarters in the same way Liara does.

The funny thing is Miranda is supposed to be Ashley x10 in terms of attitude do to her wealthy upbringing and her genetic modifying. So romancing isn't going to get any easier in ME2. But I admit to be intrigued by the possibility of romancing Tali as the Bioware devs hinted we might be able to do.

As for Shepard, he/she has the potential to really become a major character in gaming culture. Perhaps not as big as the Master Chief, but the way Martin Sheen talks about Shepard at the start of the ME2 launch trailer sounds so very ennobling.

I am sad to know that no other class has access to Assault Rifle, so I switched to Soldier class, I just love the assault rifle.
I will let the other character deal witht he biotics and tech stuff.

PS. I hate that giant disc shape on my characters back, which is the rocketlauncher, I hope I can remove it at some point, its ugly and annoying.

Seriously, are they still doing that? Fucking annoying. Why not let me choose whichever fucking gun I want? I know it's all about choice and bla bla bla, but come on...can you think of lamer tactics to add replay value? Like the game even needs that! :(

What about the sniper, can you use that in any other class than soldier?

Annoying indeed.

What they should have done is that the classes that hasent a certain weapon in their list you can still pick them up and use it however once you pick that weapon then you are not as good with it compared to the original class.

For example Adept has heavy pistols and submachine guns.
Now if I wanted assault rifle I should be able to use that as well (the game wont let me though) but when I use the assault rifle, I wont have the perfect aiming nor precision hits like the Soldier class has.

Anyways, this whole "certain weapons are exclusive to certain class" is bad IMO.
However, submachine gun is the closest thing you can get to an assault rifle if you want to use biotics as well, I might go with Adept again.

I checked the screenshots of the game a bit more and I noticed that not matter what class you pick, that stupid looking disc shape is still on your back, which is the rocket launcher.
Why cant we store the weapons we dont want to use in the weapons locker, meh.

That's disappointing to hear, Bioware said that they were doing away with those restrictions.

Agreed.

I would say that before play creating a new character...etc. watch the class videos for each class. In the very beginning of the videos there is a full info about the class. Pause and watch out for the weapons, they list all the weapons that, that certain class can use, that way you know exactly what type of firearms you are getting.

I say Adept is close to automatic weapons and biotics.
Sure, the class wont get assault rifle but a full auto submachine gun is close enough and good and add biotics and you are good to go.

I will give Adept another shot.

My problem with the game is the whole combat feels like a massive step back. It's basically an out and out shooter, theres no real choice to anything, upgrades mean nothing and can be completely ignored with no impact to the combat system and you have limited choice as to what to wear or equip.
With no inventory system goes any real customisation or choice and instead comes along more and more restrictions, youre basically limited to what the game supplies weapon wise, want a new assault rifle? tough, dont get one of those till you visit a specific world so far through the game, and even then it makes no difference whether you equip it or the old one as it has NO stats. Heck, i aint even been able to change how my party looks, remember in the last game there was equipment for all the characters? well not any more, bar the odd weapon (same restrictions etc as mentioned above) you cannot change anything about your companions, they look the same at the beginning as at the end.

Game, story wise is great, its the same universe, its well told etc etc, but the combat is wholly forgettable and falls within the mould of any generic 3rd person shooter. I'm just SO disappointed in what Bioware has done here, theyve taken a loved RPG and stripped all the RPG elements out of it.

The game is very much a 3rd person shooter if ME1 is anything to go by. It's the core of the game, and limiting that by taking away the most usefull weapon in the game for all classes but the soldier is not a healthy way to support the "RPG's are all about choice" argument. There are plenty of other things to seperate the different classes. Obviously, the soldier should have to stand out compared to the other classes in terms of weaponary, but there are better ways of doing that.

For example, limit the amount of weapons you can carry at a time for all other classes than the soldier. Require more time to get fully trained in the different weapons, etc etc. If you can't see that there are much better ways to differentiate the classes, then you don't get the point of gaming in general.
