GAMER VERDICT
All too often, games that try to encompass so many elements, genres and features as Mass Effect does fall flat on their arses from spreading themselves too thinly. Here, though, BioWare proudly displays a mastery of its trade worthy of its reputation, giving us a massive and oddly personal sci-fi tale that is sure to keep you busy until Christmas if you try to attempt every task that comes your way. You’ll want to, as well. It’s just one of those games that devours your spare time and makes hours tick by in seconds. Clear your diaries, people.

Slashdot.com - 4/5
Some two years after the 'next generation' of console games began, I've finally had a 'next-gen' experience. I've never met a BioWare game I didn't like (even liked Jade Empire , if you'll recall), and the much anticipated, hotly discussed Mass Effect is my game of the year ... which is not to say it's perfect. Gamers hoping for crystalline purity will be disappointed by, among other things, graphical pops, lengthy load times, and some occasionally stupid AI. It doesn't matter. Warts and all, this voyage to the edge of the galaxy and back is some of the best storytelling I've ever experienced in a game. It's like living a movie, a good one, where you decide the ending in a deeply meaningful way. Read on for my impressions of humanity's first steps onto the galactic stage.

Though not without its flaws, this game is a classic title. It transcends the RPG genre, and realizes the dream of next-gen storytelling. Certain to be a part of many serious gamers' collections, and definitely worth purchasing.

lol, sorry for the double post mods, but i cant go back and edit and i just realized Beagle said AC not ME. :S No Beagle, i was not talking about that fair review of AC, i was talking about the preview of ME. Look, i know AC isnt without flaws, but i dont care, i had a blast with it even if it was repetitive. But this is off topic, so im done.

GamePro - 4.75/5
Mass Effect: The Best RPG of 2007
PROS:
The game features an absorbing story that is expertly told.
There is a tremendous amount of depth to the game, from the character customization options to the world at large.
The overall presentation is also fantastic with pleasing visuals, a vibrant galaxy and an intuitive interface.
Variety is also key: the game offers you a ton of things to do.
We could go on and on here but we're running out of room so let us just say that Mass Effect is one of the best games we've played this year...or any other year for that matter.
CONS:
The enemy and ally A.I. is surprisingly dim.
Having to use the Back button to throw grenades sucks.
The elevator rides are also ridiculously long.

I think the technical issues pissed them off a little. They actually mention that if you play this as a shooter you will fail.

VGG - 10/10
Mass Effect has managed to take everything great about the prior RPG games BioWare has created and set the bar even higher. I haven’t felt this compelled to play an RPG in years. This is primarily due to the fresh feel of the universe and BioWare’s stellar job of writing the dialog, and getting the voice actors to properly convey it. I’ve already finished the game once, and I’m getting ready to go through it again in order to take a different route here and there. While there are minor nitpicks on the technical side, my score doesn’t detract for them because they weren’t critical failures and they are overshadowed by the simply amazing game BioWare has created."

The 10 rating is one that often causes controversy. I’ve given one out (to Gears of War) already, and I’ll probably catch flack for giving it out again. The way I look at it is simply this: to me a 10 score on any title I review means that it’s so good that there will only be a few others that even come close to it in a generation. Because BioWare obliterated the bar it had helped set for RPGs and has created in my opinion the Game of the Year for 2007, Mass Effect is a solid 10 with no regrets.

palgn - 9/10
Mass Effect is undoubtedly one of those games that will be talked about for a very long time. BioWare have set a new standard in storytelling, and if you have even the faintest interest in RPGs or science fiction, then this game simply demands to be played. While there are some technical issues and awkward gameplay decisions that are hard to ignore, when it comes down to it, Mass Effect is so compelling that most people will be able to push the issues aside and immerse themselves in one of the most detailed game worlds every created. A story of this quality should be experienced by all Xbox 360 owners.

I like and respect GS (not sure about this reviewer though?), Its not that bad really, they pretty much docked a point because he did not like the combat and tech hitches?, not everyone will like the combat, my biggest complaint would be lack of real tutorial, the manual that comes with the game is very basic, so allot of people will just dive into the combat and get owned and then complain about the combat, i'm 20hrs in and now using the storm attack and knocking foes out with the butt of my gun, using squad orders to tell them to take cover or train the fire on one target or follow me and get the hell out of there!, i'm using cover like a pro and the power wheel to lay the smackdown on my foes, selecting the right ammo for a particular enemy, balancing my squad so matter what or who i meet in battle, there going down!, most of this stuff i found out in combat are trail and error (and the sample prima game guide), like the guy from 1up said the reason he found the combat in Mass Effect so amazing was because Bioware showed him how to play the game, whereas his other 1up team were having problems with the combat as for them it was all trial and error finding stuff out, but that aside i think those that review this game as a shooter first and rpg second will always give a score like this, i think theres around 25 reviews out there and only 3 have given below a nine, with pretty much combat and tech issues there biggest problem, but everyone of them agree that this is an amazing story/game that must be played by all 360 owners :).
