It does look like Shenmue from an art style point of view though, it reminds me a lot of Shenmue one when you are in Yokosuka.

But its nothing like FF7 either ... :P

Closer to Shenmue than FF7 IMO thats for sure.

Shenmue wasn't a adventure game it was closer to an RPG. (but thats semantics)

Well it's obviously not precisely like FF7, but it's really set up in a traditional RPG sense and that's a good game to grab if you wanna convey that in an argument. :D

You go into stores only to shop umbrellas to whack people over the head with, and the core game is really all about the fighting and its equivalent of "quests", just like any jRPG is.

But really, fantasy setting and pointy hair and nobody would assume it to have Shenmue ambitions. I will readily agree that on the surface, because of its setting, it's an easy mistake to make. Until you get into the game really.

I think it's prolly really easy to be disappointed in it if you expect it to be like Shenmue, but if you view it as the crazy brawler it is, then it's suddenly very good at what it does. It's really a great way of keeping the addictive face kicking of old alive but presented in a cinematic, modern way.

EDIT:
Well I responded to a different looking post so I had to change some things. But no, I definitely think it's more like FF7 than Shenmue. Give FF7 a Yakuza/present day makeover and presto.

Well I never went into expecting it to be Shenmue, but the likeness is deffinately there, I only played the first one and got bored of it quickly, but there was always small things that made it remind me of Shenmue without a doubt.

MY god Simon have you even played FF7.. lol

Well of course they're really different, but I'm mainly refering to the way the world is set up, what different places do, how the core gameplay works. You can't even get into a fight in Shenmue unless the story leads into one. I mean who cares if it's a candy bar or a health potion or GREEN HERB, that's just surface. :)

Never played Yakuza before.

I like the demo, the city looked really great.

But was really hard to play it, not knowing Japanese.

i dont like the fact they've gone for a really traditional japanese setting. i never played the first (and obviously not the second since it isnt out) but i prefared what i saw of that, with the modern day tokyo type setting...this feudal japan-like setting doesnt do it for me at all.

I can't wait to give this a go, you can't go wrong with Samurai's for me. I even liked the old Way of the Samurai games :P

ok, after playing it i can say visually while not jaw dropping is still moderately impressive in its own right, especially the town, exploration demo. combat feels good both hand to hand and sword based. but the overall silence of the world just sucks. i just cant ignore the lack of voice acting and music in general. the town looks very cool, full of huslte and buslte but it sounds like a plague just wiped everyone out. its surreal. and VERY distracting....if silence can be such a thing.

from the demo theres no way i would pick this up. so im kinda hoping its just the fact its a demo thats made the music, 90% of the sound effects and voice acting dissapear.

Considering there was plenty of ambient crowd sounds in Yakuza I assume this is a case of early development.
