I don't think they realise that they're funky in the first place. D-pads have been varying degrees of fucked up ever since after the model 2 Saturn pad. In fact, on the Nights 3D pad for Saturn I was a bit like "wtf?" when I messed with the d-pad.

I'm lucky to have a pad that is bang on, I use it for Pro Evo. It's dead beaten up now but does the job :)

You can fix them by taking them apart and using some sandpaper to enlargen the hole where the d-pad pops through. There was a site that had a good guide on this, can't remember the link though.

Sensible Soccer will be awesome :)

I sincerely doubt that'll actually fix the real problem with the pad. It's too high and way too clunky. The whole "island" the cross rests on is gigantic and hard plastic.. it's like moving a coin from a pirate's gold chest around.

I hear it helps. I generally use my arcade stick for most precision applications, but I might as well give this a shot. I need more precision for when I pick up Pac-Man CE :)

I don't doubt that it helps, but my problem with the pad is that it's like this T shaped thing that you basically swing around. Traditionally, d-pads have registered by you pressing the different extremes downwards, and a bunch of points on the board would pick up on it. Here you don't press anything downwards but rather slide the entire thing around which is super awkward to me. Knifing anything won't actually fix the way the pad is designed.

I'll do it anyway, trusting it makes coping with it easier, but for me the problem still exists.

Well, generally speaking I think I agree Simon, but I liked the D-Pad on the original S-Type and it wasn't much different. The only real difference is that it had a bit less give (as in, was a bit stiffer) and it actually worked. So this might be enough for me. When it comes down to more demanding applications I can deal with a joystick.

Well, I've decided I'm gonna do this. The sandpaper technique presumably involves taking the pad apart. Is it very fiddly and stuff inside or do most things sit firmly attached?

Did it, and it actually helps quite a bit. Still a big clunky d-pad though, but I wasn't expecting that to change.

I played some in Lumines with it (one of the more demanding d-pad games I have for the 360 bar DOA4) and it really does what I want way more often now. I even resorted to playing it with the analogue stick before.

To those of you who decide to do this though, two things:

1) Don't be shy with the removal of plastic. Go pretty wild, it'll be neccessary

2) If you've got a wireless pad, remove the tiny sticker towards the bottom of the battery slot to reveal the final screw.
