BeamNG.drive has been available in Early Access on Steam for over eleven years now and has already delighted many PC gamers. I you haven't heard of it, it is a racing game featuring a sophisticated physics engine and damage simulation that’s as extreme as it is realistic, but it’s above all a title where the freedom given to the player turns it into a true sandbox experience. Its arrival on PlayStation 5 this week is therefore a major event, even if Sony console owners will have to do without mods. There’s still plenty to do, however, with a career mode that guides novice players through the different features and possibilities, as well as a free-roam mode where you can do whatever you please. A wide variety of challenges are also on offer, such as rally races, chases where you play as either the police or the fugitive, or even 4x4 obstacle courses to name but a few. This PS5 Pro version features quite a pretty good image quality, but there's clear pop-in and the experience isn’t entirely smooth, with the frame rate clearly fluctuating between 40 and 60 fps. If you have a VRR display, you’ll notice the fluctuations less, but they’ll still be visible. Note the welcome HDR support, but also a user interface that can sometimes be a bit confusing to navigate with the controller.
