The survival adventure game The Long Dark from Hinterland Games which follows bush pilot Will Mackenzie and Dr. Astrid Greenwood has been available in early access since late 2014 and this weekend the studio announced the first season will be out starting August 1st for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The sandbox mode has been rebranded as Survivor Mode and the story mode as Wintermute which is also the name of this first season. On release date, out of the five episodes included in your pruchase, the first two will be availble while the other three will drop throughout 2017 and early 2018. Available for some time now on Steam's Early Access and Xbox One Game Preview, The Long Dark will release officially in Spring 2016 when the first part of Story Mode's Season One launches. The latest video narrated by Jennifer Hale teases that mode where players will control bush pilot Will Mackenzie and doctor Astrid Greenwood. It was announced during the Microsoft press conference, some games will be available in early access on Xbox Live, with a one-hour trial version for each so you can see if they're worth your money. Inside you'll find two homemade videos of The Long Dark on Xbox One.

Microsoft announced the Xbox One Game Preview, a program similar to Steam's early access. All titles entering the service will offer a trial. Those who purchase the game via Game Preview will receive for free Season One of the episodic story mode when it launches later this year.

The Long Dark has been available on Steam Early Access for a little while now, but since we sadly never got any answer from the dev team, we finally decided to buy the game on the very first day of the Steam sales. As you probably know, The Long Dark is a survival game in which you have to fight against the unforgiving weather and the local fauna to stay alive as long as possible. Only the sandbox mode is available for the moment, so all you can do is freely explore the open environment, loot everything you can and see the next day. A story mode will be added in the future, which will definitely add some incentive to play the game if you're anything like us. Indeed, as promising as the game looks in its current state, it needs more than mere survival to make it truly appealing to us in the long run. Now if you're into survival games, go for it, Hinterland Studio's title has a superb atmosphere and it manages to convey an incredible sense of loneliness and despair.
