PS3

The still mysterious Gran Turismo HD (is it a game or just a PS3 demo?) now has its own home page at Sony, along with these 12 1080p images. I'd like Sony to finally decide what this is all about. As long as there is online play, a "simple" GT4 port could be quite nice on PS3.

hmmm why do this. I mean its gran turismo upscaled. Are they actually making a gran turismo for the ps3 or just releasing an upscaled ps2 port :S. I really dont see the point in this. One would assume the backwards compatibility is capable of upscaling and adding some AA and AF like the 360.

1080p or 2160p!!! this is one of the weakest game in next-gen of video games i ever seen.Realism and style are the name of the next-generation game, and GTHD just looks like a ps2 game in higher resolution.

It's not just upscaled. The ported the engine to the PS3, and have it run at 1080p. I guess they also added a bit of details here and there so it didn't look too bland.

they said they went back and rerendered from the source art, which is nice, the cars look sharp, etc., but what about visual effects, motion blur, reflections not to mention damage (yeah we know we're not getting that)

plus the background textures look like shit, I dunno if they will redo those, but even the grand canyon pics, from one angle it looks ok, but fro mthe closer angle where you see the hills at roadside it's just ugly.

Well this is just lazy. Why didnt they get thier heads down and make a brand new game with nextgen graphics. I mean they are going to expect you to pay for this right? Infact if this isnt free or some sort of cheap £5 download I would be very unhappy.

If you watched the conferance he said it was a prototype just to give you a idea of what it will look like.

I did watch some of the conference mainly for riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiidge racer, and this is based on real history and here is a giant crab. But I still dont see the reasoning behind this strange version. Hopefully it will end up like GT on the psp and just disapear lol. They should get on with making a nextgen version instead of a remastered old one.

Well a launch title seems very likely. Lots of these launch titles announced look far from complete and I doubt they will make the release date. There not complete due to late dev kits and the complexity of coding for cell. So games like this could be a quick easy way to get more games on the shelf for release. It seems that sony are desperate to get this out in the market to stop the growth of 360 sales. This could lead to there being very few titles or a slew of incomplete titles being released. I dont plan on buying one at launch, I plan on getting one when the price is like 250 quid which could be 2 or 3 years after launch with a 425 quid starting price lol. The only thing im hoping for is that rumble somehow gets into the controller.

I signed up just to say this to you solomond. £425 is worth more than 599Euro. 599Euro is more like £410. I'm getting a PS3 btw and this may well just end up on the HDD pre-installed, being a tech demo and that...

Preinstalled on HDD sound interesting but I don't think Sony will miss out on the opportunity to make you poorer. :)

rumour has it they had to disable the smoke/dust particle effects to keep the high frame rate at 1080p. Which is logical given these effects are very memory bandwidth intensive and memory bandwidth is the 'weak spot' of the rsx chip.
It's definitly the case that there are no particle effects present in those shots.
However if it is the case it does raise questions about the feasibility of 1080p rendering.

Disapointing there is no anti-aliasing. I'd rather 720p with 4x AA than 'raw' 1080p. Effectivly more pixels that way anyway.

agreed, 1080p with all the visual flare of 720p is a pipe dream. Its simply not feasible in launch titles. And this wont be free lol, you have to remember that sony in thier history have never given you anything free with thier consoles.

Well, so far Sony have said it is ONLY a tech demo. If they release it and charge for it, it'll be the whole GT4, and probably not much more expensive. I can't see that happening though. I don't think they will bother developing the demo any further, which is why they may include the E3 demo on the HDD. Just speculation though...

This a tech demo? From what I understand its a game... So far I've noticed that none of the ps3 titles using hdr like heavenly sword, motorstorm are using aa. I figured they'd find a way around that issue by now, but its likely to be resolved soon I'm guessing.

Like I said so far it is simply a tech demo. Phil harrison made that clear both during the press conference and afterwards with interviews. People are jumping the gun thinking it's going to be released.

A pretty lame tech demo for a nextgen console. Its like MS saying heres our tech demo, its halo 2 weve upscaled it and added AA and AF. Of course its not as bad as the ps3 duck one. Lots of the games that are on ps3 and xbox 360 are obviosly taking much longer to get up and running on the ps3. Due to its cell processor and the fact that the 360 uses XNA. Also as I understand it, sony have still not designed the compiler for the SPEs, which forces the devs to use ASM. Other limitations are also that 2 of the SPEs are now not usable due to them both being needed by sonys OS. With such limitations its no wonder that all sony had to show at e3 was like 4 games one of them being an upscaled PS2 port.

I agree it wasn't a very good tech demo, however I haven't heard of any of these limitations. Plus the other PS3 games were reportedly very good looking like Heavenly Sword, and Resistance Fall of Man, I don't think it was a bad showing ion terms of games. They also had more than 4 games. Don't forget Motorstorm and erm ... Sonic.

Bad showing? They had at least 10 games playable....
I wonder who expected more titles at E3. (Killzone maybe but I guess next years E3...)

Optimusv2: Heavenly Sword uses 4xAA and HDR16. (not true HDR16 but the effect is the same according to the developers)

the limitations are true, a few developers have shown thier distaste for what sony has given them to work with. Thier latest devkit was like a giant brick with dip switches. And apparantly each SPE has its own small amount of memory and no built in fail safes in the kits to stop them from overflowing. Basically only SPE code can be ran on SPEs. You cant just say the main processor is overworked lets offload some tasks onto the SPEs and use them. The code needs to be pretty much perfect, its not forgiving to errors. 360 devkits, a school boy could get code running on them lol. The main problem is its just costing too much money. You basically need to have two types of code, normal code and spe code. And both need to be running perfectly for you to get anything out of the ps3. And developers simply aint happy with it.
