No real point in these images, and they do the game no favours at all seeing its already out across the pond, and hits here tomorrow.

Well the game certainly looks much better on my tv. I'm simply blown away by how much polish Bioware has given this game. the cinematic quality blows everything else out of the water, especially the voice acting and great character design.

I'm starting to think this is the favorite game so far this gen.

This game is currently blowing my mind. I just started, and I got to Omega. Can you say bladerunner awesome?!! I can NOT believe how it looks so much better than ME1 but also runs way better too! I'm in love!...

So is this game extremely tied with the first, to the point where if I just played ME2 without having played the first I would be lost?
Or can it stand on its own.

There are many references to things that happened in the first game, especially in the side quests. You should play the first game first. Of course, the story is still understandable without playing the first one, but I would recommend playing the first one - quite cheap these days.

And it is just plain awesome to see the character you spent so much time on return for another game. Connects you from the start...

you probably wouldn't be EXTREMELY lost. you could do it, the game is ultimately stand alone. they'll ask you about things you did in the past (ME1) but you can't actually get them wrong. they'll reference things in the past, but they aren't required knowledge to complete the game.

that having been said you'd be missing out on one of Bioware's key touted features of the game being different based on certain key decisions of ME1 (if you start brand new it simply applies a set "canon" template of what you supposedly did in ME1).

and as is always the case when jumping into the middle of a series, its not going to bother explaining all the races too you, all the technology to you, all the politics to you, etc etc.
there is a general assumption you've played ME1 and know all that already.
that having been said, you should be able to pick it up as you go along. ME's story's complexity was pretty overrated by the press. you should be able to figure it out and grasp what you needed to grasp.

in short its not ideal going in without ME1, but ME1 isn't needed either.

Considering this game is going for feeling extremely personal and will only continue in a 3rd iteration, you should probably play the original.

It's a great game, hopefully it'll draw you in and you can appreciate it before jumping into the second. Just makes the overall experience that much better.
