If you listened to our October podcast, you should know a little about Maize. This adventure game by developer Finish Line Games is finally available today and we can share our feeling about it. We completed it a few weeks ago, so it's now time to read our verdict, and check out our videos. If you're interested in the game though, try not to watch to many of them, as exploring and figuring what to do is the main point of the game.
Verdict
Maize is quite a unique experience, mainly thanks to its crazy universe and characters. The game is a mix between a walking simulator (you must walk/run and explore your environment thouroughly, often reading all sorts of documents) and an adventure game, in which you must figure out what to to. There is guidance to help you out though, like the shapes of the missing objects you must combine to build odd things, or the fact that each item of interest is underlined so you don't miss it. That being said, the world of Maize os so full of details and craziness that such help is welcome as it prevents the game from becoming frustrating. In a way, there is even a point and click vibe to the game, when you end up trying to use some of the objects in your inventory on different things. most of the time though, what you need to do makes sense, and it shouldn't take you more than 4 to 5 hours to complete. In short, Maize is a very intriguing narrative experience. When you start the game, you know nothing about the main character, other than the fact that he is standing in the middle of a corn field, but by the time you reach the crazy ending, you'll find out who you are and what you're here for. Until then, prepare to be aMaized.
- On the plus side
- Such a crazy game
- Unique game world and characters
- Pretty nice graphics
- Never frustrating
- Figuring out what to do and exploring the world to progress
- Not too long, not to short (4/5h)...
- On the downside
- Very partiel controller support (running is impossible for example)
- No subtitles (and English only)
- ... but some will probably want more
