not the best looking artowork i've seen. but its nice, they seem to excell at the innanimate stuff like weapons, objects and environments, rather then the characters and enemies. all nice to look at tho. see the process and all that.

True.

For proof : check any Oblivion NPC. All awful.

Pretty rough work...or rather a bit uneven, each cheat is varying in quality. But it still looks cool. I agree with KORN, environments and inorganic stuff looks better.

The brahmin looks gross.

As bad as Oblivion's were, Morrowind's were even worse. Oblivion had a character creation system. Morrowind's were horribly inefficient, there were remakes of the models by users that used way less resources yet looked tons better.

They should delay Fallout 3, and let modders 3 months with the build in their offices, so they would mod it and THEN launch the game, fully modded. Imagine what Oblivion would have been with all the fixes the community released on PC.

Well, hopefully Bethesda has learned from the past and mods won't be needed as much.

Would be cool, but a lot of the gameplay 'fixes' aren't really so. The grass is always greener and full of diamonds and coated in gold when it comes to Bethesda games. There's nothing for Bethesda to learn, they'll be damned if they do and damned if they don't.

I'm pretty sure they just pressed the "random" button on the character creation tool for each NPC and called it a day. They're mostly awful due to a complete lack of effort. Still a fucking great game though, regardless of what people say.

EDGE impression VIA Next Gen Biz
The next encounter, which saw Hines beset by two staggering radiation-zombies, known as ghouls, was dealt with using the Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System (or VATS) – Bethesda’s solution to the lack of pure turn-based combat. Freezing time, Hines was able to flick through the various enemies, queuing up shots on multiple ghouls. Having selected your targets, the view switches to an external camera, swooping in on the bullet-riddled bodies as they fly back in slow motion.

Sounds great! VATS system is going to be awesome :) I am glad that they have that system in the game. I am going to use it all the times. I love when the games have a bit of tactical options too. I am really happy that this game uses SPECIAL, skills and perks. It's going to be awesome and I can't wait.

Thats cause these are actually concepts, not "concepts" that are made entirely for the purpose of releasing to the public. Actual concept art is usually pretty hairy around the edges and stuff.

actually you'll find a lot of concept art WE see is just general concept art, its simply that the artists are more skilled then bethesdas and it all looks like a lot more time has been put into it. game artists can knock out the really good stuff in maybe an hour or so. this however (at least character art wise) looks like its been drawn by a less skilled artist...thats all. that prince of persia artwork was better then this and it took the guy what? 21 minutes.

You might want to take note the fact that these look like for the most part were drawn by hand (minus probably the robot concepts)
The Prince of Persia stuff was all done on the computer and there will always be a huge difference between using a pen or pencil in your hand versus some stylized brushes in Corel Painter and so on
For concepts that are hand drawn, this is probably considered really high end and took a lot of time

I don't know.. digital painting isn't too far off from the real deal. See: Craig Mullin's (www.goodbrush.com)--his traditional art and his photoshop art are basically one in the same.. and he basically revolutionized digital painting.

Nah, I don't care what program youre using, you can still identify a computer rendered drawing over a hand drawn piece of work any day
Computer still can't replicate human touch well enough

I do think the computer is an easier tool to use though, as you can just hit "undo" and the masking or various other techniques can be major shortcuts. Especially when you don't have to use wet paint or wet ink... there's just more labor involved

That being said, I'm surprised they still do it this way

Also I think Ashley Wood is probably the best example of an artist who mixes real painting with digital painting

It doesn't matter what program you're using if you've got the skills. Even though Painter is obviously pretty capable of simulating certain mediums (and surfaces), in the hands of the right artist, Photoshop is just as capable. Craig Mullins a perfect example of that, from very high expression work to hyper realism, he does indeed capture the human touch in a purely digital environment. He is only capable of doing so because he's a fantastic painter period.
