Press release:

REMEDY ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCES NEW ARCADE MODE IN ALAN WAKE’S AMERICAN NIGHTMARE AND MID Q1 2012 RELEASE

ESPOO, FINLAND – December 19, 2011 – It was announced today that Alan Wake’s American Nightmare, Remedy Entertainment’s stand-alone digital spin-off for Xbox LIVE Arcade, will include a relentlessly intense arcade mode called “Fight till Dawn”. Published by Microsoft Studios, the game will be released in middle of the first quarter of 2012.

The main story mode in Alan Wake’s American Nightmare is part of the ‘Night Springs’ TV show fiction and offers an exaggerated pulp action adventure where the horrors of reality have the all too easy habit of coming true. Alan Wake finds himself stuck in an altered reality filled with dangerous shadows; he must leap into action and pursue his evil doppelganger, Mr. Scratch, across the Arizona mesa towards the town of Night Springs. Scratch, a supernatural serial killer, has his evil plans set on Wake’s wife, Alice. Wake must learn to control reality itself and unravel the secret to Mr. Scratch’s demise while using the power of light to put an end to the darkness.

The previously unannounced “Fight till Dawn” arcade mode places Wake in the battle of his life. Players must survive a full night of enemy onslaughts while racking up their score. With loads of new enemies to battle, players will require a deep arsenal of weapons; from old stalwarts like the flare gun to wild new favorites like the nail gun and old school Remedy favorites like the Uzi. Thankfully, safe havens and unlockable weapons dot the landscape, allowing for a momentary respite from the darkest of nights. Surviving until dawn is only the beginning as online leaderboards pit friends head to head to see who the real champion of light is.

Alan Wake’s American Nightmare will be published by Microsoft Studios and will be available for Xbox Live Arcade in mid Q1 2012. The game is rated T for Teen by the ESRB. Please keep an eye out for updates on Facebook www.facebook.com/alanwake and Twitter @Remedygames.

You guys think that this will be graphically on par with 'Alan Wake'?

Dont how how representative this trailer is, but theres some serious tearing in it...

The first game was incredible looking so i'd be surprised if it was graphically on par with it being a download game.

The first game had 2GB of main game and a little more for cutscenes for the 10-hour game. This game is 2GB total for the 5 hours, including live-action footage, so it looks exactly the same (maybe even better, as it seems the resolution has been upped). There's an 11-minute gameplay video on youtube, if you don't believe it.

I hope it's more of the same and not 'more but less'. I see lots of tearing and can't tell if the quality and shadow play is really there like it was in the first one.

you can't be certain. the thing is, it's already the best downloadable game for 2012, better... is yet to come.

This is just for cash-in as AW din't do well. If it gets decent numbers I think they will definitely make AW2 or something, probably multiplat

AW2 is already on the making, genius. This started on the off time of remedy going exprimental with the sanbox they had after finishing AW DLC.

"We are going to continue with Wake. We think there’s a lot of potential. This is one step on Wake’s path forward, and it certainly doesn’t end here. For some gamers it begins here, and we think this is a cool entry point. But right now, this is what we’re focused on."

That's wrong. There are stories about the actual figures. It did pretty well.

Judging from the 11 minute video on youtube this definitely looks better than the first game. Screen tear wasn't bad, more color, much sharper, and it seems as though it may possibly be running at full 720p? Can't really tell but it's sharper than the first game even in the video.

And how can you know that those stories are correct? Considering the time it was released (RDR) and the lackluster marketing, the low sales is quite logical.

Matias Myllyrinne and Oskari Häkkinen have even commented on the low sales in interviews. That is better sources than "stories" in my opinion.

Either way it doesn't matter. They are continuing with the series. It wouldn't be logical to do so if the sales weren't good enough to warrant a sequel or some kind of continuation.

All I know is this game is easily one of the best of this generation and one of the best ever made. I play this game much more than Killzone, Uncharted 2 or 3, Halo(ok maybe not Halo...), Gears, etc.. It's the only game this gen that I've actually been addicted to until completion. That is saying something. I'm super excited to experience more soon!

Just had to point out that actual high ranking Remedy employees had talked about the low sales, when you said someone was flat out wrong. But maybe you know more than the actual CEO of Remedy ;).

I love the first one to bits, being an old-time Max Payne fan i love to references and style in Remedys games. The attention to detail like radio shows, tv shows, funny conversations etc. So I'm right with you on really looking forward to the sequel.

Yeah sales are supposed to be around 1.5 million, for a new IP it's not bad but not great.

And that amount of sales for a game that has been in development for 5+ years with MS pumping in money and hoping for it to be a console pusher/seller is not that great. Thinking that a "horror/thriller" game which is quite a niche genre would achieve that was a bit naive on MS side. To get the oppurtunity do develop such a game with that kind of a budget is quite the oppurtunity for Remedy though. It deserved better sales, unfortunately a lot of people don't like these kinds of games or just don't give them a chance.

And now Remedy needs funds because of the low sales so they announce this action xbla game and the pc version of Alan Wake.

1.5 is actually good on a single platform but I don't think it reached that.

What the dev or publisher predicted is the only way to know if those sales are good or not. But knowing MS. A company who cancels sequels to games that dont sell 6+ million, then i can't imagine it's exactly an earner for them. But who knows. I doubt it tho. You only have to look at MS's portfolio of games to see how they work as a publisher. They could have bought bizzare entertainment to continue working on the PGR series. They could have let RARE continue to make the planned sequels to banjo, kameo and perfect dark, but they didnt, because the previous title in that franchise didnt reach gears or halo sales numbers, i think that's why this game is an arcade release. It's the only way for remedy to make progression within the series without MS having to spend millions funding the game. Cheap and cheerfull release, low dev costs, low sale price which is more appealing to people, probably profitable. A real sequel would mean AAA productions, high dev costs, long dev cycle and probably non profitable. I realise MS are a business who want to make money, but i sure do wish they'd give devs a chance after a game of theirs doesnt sell like crazy. Not all games need to be 9 million sellers like halo. But sadly that's all MS care about. I can't imagine it'll be long before they cast aside turn 10 too. Maybe they'll get them to make kinect titles or something?

I am not saying sales matters but this standalone expansion pack is a good reason to believe it. Talented team like Remedy wouldn't want to make 15 or 20$ downloadable games.
