Batman: Arkham Asylum keeps surprising us with yet another great trailer this showing some more close range combat in motion.

This is indeed quite impressive but I am quite interested to see how all these moves are actually maped to the controller. There seems to be quite a huge variety of grabs and what not but cant help but wonder if that's something we construct ourselves or not.

Either way, I am happy to see a developer put this much attention to a license.

i can see it being very automatic, with the game doing a lot of the work for you in terms of which grab to do at what time. i mean, the stealth elements look really automatic too, so it wouldnt be surprising to find out the combat it as well.

game looks really good tho.

I wouldn't be surprised if the grabs simply relied on the positioning of the player and the enemy, all using the same one or two combos.

lol the small lines then were pretty pathetic especially batman's and it's looking excellent from what we've seen. Hope a demo comes out and having it all automatic would kill the game alot but hey let's be optimistic about this title shall we?

Wow! Comabt looks almost like in Watchmen The Game. And that's very good :). Watchmen's combat system has great flow which lets to beat up 15 guys without getting hit.

Sefton Hill: Button mashing will only get you so far because you will quickly lose your combo and attacks will become much less effective. Against the weakest enemies in the game this will mean you will get hit if you do not counter the incoming attacks and just try to strike through these. Against the tougher enemies armed with knives and stun sticks, you will get punished even more if you make the wrong decision at the wrong time.

To take down enemies successfully you need to constantly assess multiple variables within the game: who is my next target, what is the most effective move to use on that target and then get the timing right for that attack. In order to master the FreeFlow system you need to make split second decisions on all three of these areas constantly which takes a very quick assessment of the situation and a lot of skill!

There is also a critical strike bonus which doubles the power of each strike. However, in order to use this power you need to get the timing of each strike perfect. If you mash the buttons you will never get the critical strike bonus.

In the main story mode you start off fighting a few of The Joker's henchman and things quickly ratchet up as they scavenge new weapons from around the asylum and attack in much greater numbers. This forces players to use more advanced tactics including the evade and cape stun to subdue these henchmen. On top of this, there are more advanced enemies, such as the deformed henchmen (you get a sneak peak of in the combat trailer) that requires its own unique tactics to takedown and changes the overall fight dynamic completely as players figure out how to use the enemies against each other. In Batman: Arkham Asylum the player's constant need to select the best move, the direction of the move and get the timing right keeps the gameplay fresh throughout the entire story. And, of course, players are rewarded after each fight with extra XP for achieving a high combo and also for the amount of variety in move selection.

Some people said the combat plays like Assassin's Creed's. Is there truth to this?

Thats Kevin Conroy. He did the voice of batman in the old cartoon batman the animated series from the early 90s as well as the voice of batman in justice league and batman gotham knight. He is in my eyes the true voice of batman because I've heard him since I was 5.

Games also looking really good.

I'm not sure what you mean exactly.
if you look at the previous footage, everything seems very automatic. to get to the rafters with the grappling hook, it's a single button press and the game does the rest for you, you dont even have to be looking at the rafters at all to perform the maneuver. also, things like the glide kicl, rather then being a move you actually perform yourself. you simply look at a target, and press the blue button (which again, automatically does a glide kick) everything is very context sensative and automatic. and i wouldnt be surprised if the combat plays the same way, you maybe tap one or 2 buttons, and any variation in the moves comes from the game simply picking and choosing something cool to look at randomly based on where you attacked the enemy from. it's not a BAD thing...but it does look like it takes a lot of control away from the player.

I actually hope the gameplay is simple, this is not the type of game that needs you to enter complex combo's, it's more about stalking and the fact that Batman is a tough bastard is a given. When does Batman ever hit someone multiple times to take them out unless it's one of the main villains...

Oh dear.. Clones running about the asylum. You'd think as this is based on a celebrated franchise they'd put more effort into populating it in a reasonable manner.

I did enjoy the previous stealth video though. Definitely worth a look in.
