Trailer Xbox 360 PS3

Sega just sent us the fourth episode of the series showing the various important points of Bayonetta's gameplay, with this time the utterly useful Witch Time.

I really think the devs are starting to shove the hype of this game down our throats. These little 30 second videos that keep getting released aren't really telling us much about this game at all. I'm sure it will be a descent game, but they really are starting to pour it on a bit.

@ omega - Indeed. With all the videos, the demo, and the full game out in Japan, it's getting ridiculous. The game feels old and I haven't even played it yet.

Looks cool, but I'm not a fan of both blood and rings coming out of downed enemies. Too much.

It should be AMMO instead of rings and blood like Gears,NG2 amirite?

:P

I'd be fine with just blood, and the ammo in Gears doesn't spray all over the damn place in a tacky, gaudy mess. NG2's blood and gore was fucking fantastic.

I was just joking and I agree blood in NG2 was glorious, the blood in here it gets the job done IMO nothing too fancy but the perfect amount.

As for the rings I like them honestly, its just something diferent for a change in a action game besides they are angels and they lose their halos if they get defeated.

Don't get me wrong, I like the blood in the vids I've seen. I'm just not a fan of the rings in addition to the blood.

Bayonetta was looking cool a year ago when we first saw, but I honestly didn't think it would much an improvement over Devil May Cry or Ninja Gaiden, but looking at the reviews this is getting across the board seems it might just be one of the coolest games to be released in a very long time. I'm seriously looking forward to it.

BooMMooB: if the demo represents the game as a whole it does play a whole lot like DMC (especially DMC3), but as far as i'm concerned that's a good thing. I'm pretty much sure that it'll be the #1 action game this generation, even if it's not a wholly new experience.

It doesn't actually play like Devil May Cry. It has a lot of similarities, of course it does, but the fundamental mechanics have you playing differently. It's about attacking from a combo list, last second dodges and building up meter for instant kills. It plays like Bayonetta.

In fact the combo list and dodging would warrent Ninja Gaiden and God of War if any comparison was valid. Though obviously without the bad design of the former and mashing of the latter.

The combat system is like DMC in almost every way, only expanded. The input works the same (what with delayed pushes and stuff) and dodging was totally a part of DMC as well, only you now have a separate maneuver for it instead of, as in ie DMC3, the trickster style or just plain and simple jumping out of harms way. The moves list is expanded and there are added feature but the DMC core gameplay is still there and if you don't see that i suggest you go back and play through DMC and DMC3 a couple of times to refresh your memory :P And the torture attacks are basically just a different take on the Devil Trigger. Almost forgot to mention that.

To even compare the combat system in Bayonetta with that in NG or GoW seems pretty sill.

The input is completely different, Devil May Cry has ONE attack chain per weapon that expands through delayed button presses, plus one aerial chain on Nero in the latest. Generally it relies completely on command moves and custom combos. That is to say custom combos are DMC.

Bayonetta is the exact opposite of that, with 99% of it being predetermined chains and delays, and a couple of command moves. With some advanced tricks using dodges that aren't really tricks but just there to keep flow lost in similar attack branch orientated games. Yes, similar games. The games I mentioned, whose comparison you deem "silly" that are all about attack branches, delays and dodges. Like Bayonetta.

And to finish. Having a dodge isn't the same as rewarding dodge with slow-down. Devil Trigger is certainly not the same as Torture Attacks. I suggest you play through DMC1/3 to realise that just because something looks similar visually doesn't mean it's controlled the same. Thanks.

The devil trigger and torture attacks are not the same, but the torture attacks obviously substitute them: hit enemies to fill your gage then use said gage to impose extra damage on enemies. Sure the mechanic at work is different but the concept remains more or less the same.

So in DMC each weapon has one combo string (varies in dmc3 if you use sword master skill) that can be varied in different ways by delays and a few more weapon specific moves. Bayonetta comes along and says screw that, let's add more combo strings for each weapon. That's the difference i see. You can still make whatever wacky combos with weapon changes that you want, you just have more stuff to choose from this time around. I at least don't rely on just the combo strings in the Bayonetta demo, i cancel them to launch an enemy, continue my combo in the air and so forth.

On another note games that "are all about attack branches, delays and dodges" basically encircles every third person action game ever made. And to even insinuate that God of War, Ninja Gaiden and Bayonetta should play fairly alike is just draging them all over the same edge.

If that's all it takes for something to be the same then I can see why we're having this discussion. As all mechanics are identical in your world.

You don't have more 'stuff' to choose from because your 'stuff' comes with prerequiste attacks and, unlike command moves, can't be used on demand. This is basically the point I was making in its entirety. You can, however, abuse evade to skip attacks in a chain.

Clearly I meant they were the focus and even clarified this once already, which I won't do again. I also never said they all played alike (clearly NG and GoW do not), I said if it should be compared to any game it should be those over DMC.
