Activision press release:

In development for both Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, the upcoming downloadable content will thrust gamers into a hot zone of added combat across a variety of intense multiplayer locales.

“We’ve demonstrated our commitment to delivering the best multiplayer experience in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and that continues with our plans for new downloadable content,” explains Infinity Ward’s Community Manager, Robert Bowling. “We’re excited about the new maps, and the added gameplay variety, and we can’t wait to wrap things up and get online with everyone.”

I hope they figure out a way to get these to PC users eventually. I certainly don't mind waiting if we wind up getting them for free. There's no DRM model in place for this kind of content in COD4, so I really don't see how they can even release them on PC without people getting them freely anyway.

I really want the Carentan remake. Looks slick.

Unfortunately, IW doesn't have the conviction on this issue that Epic/Valve, or even Bungie do.

Same here. With Epic releasing FREE map packs, and IW themselves giving PC owners a free map with the Ver 1.4 patch, this just leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Instead of paying $10 for a measly four (or was it three?) maps, you could put a pre-order for GTAIV or get N+ or Ectochrome, both of which are cool as hell, especially with a level maker.

That's true. Just downloaded the Halo 3 mappacks the other day for free, something that I don't think IW will do, at least not until CoD 4 becomes obsolete.

While I mostly agree with this attitude towards IW/COD4 on this particular issue, I really don't think it's fair to call Winter Crash a "free map". It's cute, but it's still just Crash. So far as we can tell PC users are getting the short end of Activision's stick. We don't even know for sure that we're getting the maps at all yet.

In the end, I hope we do get them for free eventually, and I don't think that console users should complain if we do. You should rejoice. If there is still one (or two) outlets where free post release support is still a reality we should all be happy that it's not just dead all together.

Can't PC owners get it through modding anyway for free? Ie., a modder takes the level design and creates similar assets to make the console levels available to PC owners. There are plenty of talented modders out there for this to be possible. Also, I personally think that if IW did make these maps available to PC owners that they would not be free. If IW could squeeze money out of one group of CoD 4 owners, why not another?

How much will they cost? 10 bucks?

The pricing went through the roof recently. I can't imagine me buying them for that much even if they were good. And I whish others would do the same, since in the future you won't get DLCs for 400 points anymore and MS starts to charge even more for even less.

Well, for a couple of reasons. Firstly, there's no system in place to distribute this kind of content on the PC. Sure, they could charge for the content, but the only thing protecting it from being stripped down and redistributed through legitimate servers without the user being charged is the ranking system. There's nothing in COD4 that would prevent modders from ripping this content and distributing it freely on unranked servers.

And secondly, PC users are less likely to fall into this trap, because we're quite used to getting this kind of support for free. I don't think it would sell very well, and ranked providers wouldn't be likely to include these maps on their servers because it would segregate the community. These rifts are easier to deal with in the console environment, especially when users have shown that they don't particularly care about these issues.

So long as people honestly believe that $10 extra isn't much for this kind of content, and that segregating the community is simply no big deal, publishers will continue to charge for the content when they can. Developers with strong convictions against this trend such as Valve and Epic are unfortunately few and far between.

The game already cost console users $60.. what's a few extra increments of $10 in the form of hidden costs? ;P

“We’ve demonstrated our commitment to delivering the best multiplayer experience in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and that continues with our plans for new downloadable content,”
Marketing like that makes me sick! *pukes*

The should replace 'the best multiplayer experience in Call of Duty 4' part with 'making as much money as possible of this game'..

If they really cared about delivering the best multiplayer experience possible in Call of Duty 4 they wouldn't charge for MP maps.. Creating splits in online communities like that is *not* how you create the best multiplayer experience, so don't act like the marketing whores you are and tell plain lies..

Sadest part is there's gamers outthere that believe all that marketing BS..

Besides all this the mappack is a ripoff.. There's 1 map taken straight out of the SP (Office), and another is a remake of a old CoD map (Chinatown, or should I say Carentan).. They are so cheap to make..

I really like CoD4, but they way the makers of that game treat their fans now is really sad! No respect at all..

I'm with Grift on that front. The games alone cost quite a lot. And I know this is a rough assupmtion but I believe we get spoilt on gamecontent on the original game on purpose just to get charged for extra content. Just look how Halo 3 turned out. There are very few maps and they are medicore at best. They started working on the content long before the game was released, this alone was enough for me to not buy the mappack no matter the cost.

On top of that they charge about 1/6 of the original gameprice for content that's maybe 1/200 as much as the whole game. Bungie on that front is the king of getting as much money for as little value as possible: They charge a lot of money for remakes, for content that doesn't require much effort at all because it's already been thought of.

I was hoping this would be free on PC and PSN and people could guilt MS about charging for content, but it looks like IW planned for this all along.

The maps look OK, and I'll find it acceptable if they make it free after a couple months like Bungie with the Heroic map pack...

I don't play COD4 online anymore...

The only content that Microsoft chooses the pricing for are games that THEY publish, if anyone else publishes the game, it's up to them, Microsoft have no say what so ever. Where are these ideas about a massive Microsoft DLC price conspiracy coming from? It was Bethesda with the horse armour, remember?

Sorry, your wrong. Microsoft have the final say on everything that goes onto the marketplace, price included. They control it all. If a publisher wants to give away content for free, they need a green light from Microsoft. Their bandwidth, their rules. It's not a free shop, Microsoft get a cut on everything.

This game just looks so good. Sets the bar on Xbox 360, IMO. I have taken it for granted until playing RB6 Vegas 2, and seeing these never before screens of the DLC, makes me want it even more... and I'll pay my $10. Too much... well yes, but I'm biting.

It will split the community. I'm guessing it will, it will fall behind halo3 on the most played LIVE list. Halo3 has already had its community split due to premium pay DLC.

I'm sick of MS nickel and diming us. 3 maps... 300 pts would have been the most fair.

I'm hoping this PC designed for console maps that are coming are free. That is the plan right? Modders designing maps, on PC, that can be ported to consoles? If it free on one system, it has to be free on the other right?

I'm guessing this new DLC will be charge, 800 pts until the end of Summer, then go free, and released to the PC community for free.

MS is setting some miserable precedents this generation, HD optional, HD proprietary, HD too damn expensive. Proprietary wireless spec, so you can't use bluetooth tech for headsets, charging for gamerpics and themes, when they should be free, or unlocked via getting achievements. Imagine playing say COD4, and having 5 or 10 gamerpics, denoting how many achievents you've gotten. Finish the game, and unlock a theme... c'mon, MS!

With MS and the original Xbox, they had to be competitive... mandatory Hard Drive, fairly priced DLC... This does not bode well if MS wins this generation handily for the next time around... I'm starting to hope PS3 wins this generation, to get MS's head out of their arse. Proprietary tech sucks... Oh and its 2008, and Xbox LIVE's lobbies still suck for the most part. [getting down off soapbox]

Great looking screens by the way. I'm excited.

this will be the first (and probably last) thing i'll buy over XBL...cod4 is simply awesome enough to warrent more money being spent on it imo. its better then every other online game out there and its current maps STILL kick ass, these added 4 will simply make the experience even better. cant wait. gonna be hell playing for the first time and not having a clue where spawn points/HQpoints etc will spawn. but im sure i'll have fun learning.
