THQ has released five new screenshots of Company of Heroes 2 that depict the game's ColdTech system from Relic’s new Essence Engine 3. This new system allows the engine to paint on and remove snow, meaning it accumulate on buildings and vehicles and also it can be melted or removed from objects by the player.

C'mon Gamersyde, you missed the best bits from the press release. The snow in the game is more than just cosmetic, it also effects gameplay. Snow accumulation effects troop movements, and can reveal tracks (ala enemy movement). Plus units exposed to extreme cold can gradually freeze to death, unless they are kept warm either by building fires, or garrisoning them inside of buildings. All of which should add to more authenticity to the gameplay.

You've obviously never heard of the brutal cold of the Russian and Ukrainian winters. Successfully driving tanks and heavy armor across frozen bodies of water, was a lot more common than you would think. If you look closer at the photo even, it is not the weight of the tanks causing the breach in the ice, but explosions, possibly a mortar round of some sort. This tank column was likely caught in an ambush while they were sitting ducks out in the open, and are paying for it.
