Tecmo unveils two new fighters from Dead or Alive 5: Christie and Bayman. Watch both in action with the Hotzone gameplay video inside plus new screenshots. The game is expteced to release in September.
I thought fighting games were supposed to have really good graphics because they don't have to render large levels and several enemies. Why is this game so fugly? Those are some flatout horrendous textures.
How many fighting games do you know that use multi tiered interactive levels and run at 60fps? DOA has always had levels the size of those in action games.
The shadows look kinda bad but it's still in alpha stage. And keep in mind today's laptops outperform the 360. I haven't been blown away by ANY game in recent years

Ugh. I am so ready for new hardware.
Thats something I keep thinking about from the first released "next gen" fighting game. Jesus, even Uncharted characters with such detailed maps, have more detailed characters. I want realistic moves, tons and tons of polys on each character, blood, sweat, 3-d grass, particles.....just all these awesome things, which can be done in a fighting game.
Yeah graphics too ugly for a fighting game, still I like more realistic look and I'd honestly prefer this one over modern tekken games. At least DoA still has no stupid funny animals....

Well i'd imagine that the fact that you MUST keep it at 60 FPS at all times, no slowdowns whatsoever acceptable, is one factor. Then obviously the teams developing the fighters might not be all that technically proficient, nor ahve the same drive to make a sweet ass engine, as someone making a more narrative focused game. You have to remember that fighters are 100% driven by the mechanics, everything else has to take a step back.
That said, i don't see how this game is "fugly" in any way other than the art style.
no complaints from my side. I've always enjoyed DoA for its unique counterattack mechanics. graphics were always secondary to me ... looking forward to this game!
Mount Oum is an animator. From what i know he just rips models form games and uses them. And to be honest i don't exactly think his animations are production quality either...alright for a single guy and the quantity he produces but tbh i was never THAT impressed by his stuff :P

I'd say he is really good at stringing other peoples animations together. Any original animation he puts in is junk- see the marine, covenant, and ending scene animation in "haloid". There is a huge disconnect in quality. All the fighting animation comes straight from games/ movies. He does a really good job of choreographing them together though.
Edit: I'd only seen his "haloid" vid, which was entertaining. After reading his comments on that Dead Fantasy link, I've got more respect for him. He's teaching himself to be a better animator, but he's considers himself more a director. Cool, and good for him!
The gameplay shown has looked visually great especially the contruction site level, it's probably the level design for the war stage that highlights the weaknesses in the engine.
My annoyance with the series is that characters bring knives and swords into a fist fight yet never use them. If fights are meant to be just sparring events then leave the weaponry behind, after all why handicap yourself with the weight.

Yeah, i mean it's good that he does stuff and tries to get better but the quality of what he does is...well, rather amateurish. I think a lot of people give him cred for stuf he really doesn't do, which is why i pointed it out. But whatever, people like the stuff so good for him :)
also he needst to learn rendering and compositing :P
Is that to simulate the age and firmness of the boobs? Like if you set age to 99 they turn gravity off and give the juggs the same consistency of a 99 year old? Seems likely :P

Agreed. I think anyone with animation experience themselves don't fall for it. I don't think he tries to sell himself as an animator per se, but as a Director he really needs to have a better grasp of lighting and rendering. Ripping off shots from other movies is not good either (see Haloid, which uses so many Matrix shots it's obvious). It's hard to give him props when his work is so derivative...

The age never changed anything. It was joke from Itagaki/TN. There was an option to turn the physics off, but this was only present in DOA1. Later games only had the age setting. 0 or 99. The age you could set never made a difference. Bouncing "level" was always the same.

Characters look good. Love the more not sooo doll-like style.
