A franchise with one of the best stories. Certainly in the top 3 this generation.

If you can think of an old-school beat-them-up like Streets of Rage and you hope they'd make a sequel, this is as close as it gets (in gameplay terms). If you value a well-told cinematic storyline in a game, this is it. Go buy this game, we need Yakuza 4 in the west!

doesn't even have co-op wich is the sole purpose of SoR. Not even by chance.

Well technically there are 2p mini-games. Lol

SoR may have been a poor example, but there are many good beat-em ups that don't have coop like Spider man: Maximum carnage on SNES.

Well obviously the reference was to brawlers, and SoR is arguably the finest example of one.

Spikeout was actually a spiritual successor to Streets of Rage, and Yakuza is made by the same director and developer and is based on the same combat engine. So yep, by extension this almost literally is a sequel to SoR.

No it's not. Call it a sequel to shenmue combat, but never ever to it's sense of adventure/exploration.

Shenmue combat is rooted in Virtua Fighter combat although it has some superfluous animation that wouldn't be beneficial to an actual fighting game, added to appear more cinematic and choreographed. Yakuza's combat engine is near identical to Spikeout's, essentially frame by frame.

Yu Suzuki and AM2 - makers of Virtua Fighter - did Shenmue. Toshihiro Nagoshi and Amusement vision - makers of Spikeout - did Yakuza.

Yakuza *is* Spikeout combat rolled into a jRPG wrapping. Spikeout *was* a spiritual successor to Streets of Rage. They even pitched SoR to Sega during that time. All of these things are facts.

According to you. I don't think it is its sole purpose, as much as it might add. The combat is very alike, and that is what I'm referring to. You can do it with three other people of SoR, it doesn't change a thing that the combat is very alike.
