Can RPGs only be built around medieval and fantasy settings? Do people not get tired of this?

Is there anything different out there, apart from Fallout and Mass Effect?

There is also Deus Ex, Bioshock, and the Star Wars RPGs, but I do agree that the setting seems a bit overplayed. To be honest though, it does go perfectly with the genre.

While games with guns tend to lend themselves better to action oriented shooters, fantasy settings tend to need more dialog and depth to keep the interest.

Although Mass Effect and FO do it quite well, there is just something about crafting swords, shields, and armor, and using magic that just feels right about RPGs. Very few futuristic RPGs get the RPG part right. Increasing my accuracy with a laser rifle just doesn't scream RPG like leveling my destruction magic or longsword skill. While ME was a great series, it felt more like an action/adventure game imo. Very few skills, and everyone who chose the same class ended up identical in the end.

Still would be nice for some dev to take a chance with a different RPG though. I would be curious to see someone come up with a modern day RPG. We have medieval fantasy, and future space fantasy, but no modern day RPG. I guess Shenmue would probably be the closest thing, but skills like kitten petting and plastic toy collecting might not go over well with today's violent youth...

This!! Im not into Elvs, Dwarfs or Dragons so i very rarely get to play RPG's.

Would love to see a dark gritty upto date RPG.

There are plenty of non-violent young people, plus Shenmue has plenty of action for all the family including the violent ones, lol!. I WANT SHENMUE 3 SO BAD!!! :D (Preferably with at least some Kinect support.)

Most JRPG's don't use medieval settings, but they just aren't that popular anymore.

It's what sells presumably, but it sure beats setting a game around shaven headed angry American soldiers shooting from behind cover in the middle east.

Tearing, slowdowns, letterboxing, pop up textures up the ass, no lone wolf.

Not what I was expecting, will give it a chance when is $10 or something.

going by the demo, and the demo is supposed to NOT be a representation of the final game. You should expect 30% of torn frames on the xbox 360 version and 29 of average fps. you should expect 0% of torn frames on the PS3 version and a average of 23 frames per second.

I SHIT YOU NOT.

I meant timed exclusive not totally exclusive. The PS3 demo isn't activated until September 4th as Tw1XteR said: http://www.capcom-europe.com/blog/2012/01/dragons-...
