Video PS3

E3 is far from over since our friend DjMizuhara got back from LA with tons of videos from the showfloor. He obviously didn't use our new camera, but they're still very watchable. Let's start with Ratchet and Clank: A Crack In Time, with many many more to come!

A pretty game indeed, the only thing that compares to Pixar's CGs this gen but I think they should upgrade the engine even more. they should've added the water physics fully(as outstanding as it is in Resistance 2). its a little, very minute effect only in surface, and at random places... a bit more like the gears' water approach, only at the surface level. Apart from that the video shows we're again gonna have a blast :)

Another fun Ratchet game confirmed and it looks freakin' amazing.
Thanks for the vid.

Whatever that thing in Res2 was, it was NOT water.....It was some kinda mucus or something. :/

mucus? come on, its a far cry from that. its true 3D water, the likes of which is not even in Crysis and Cryostasis as they are also shader based flat surfaces.

Here's Resistance 2's water:

volumetric at every level :)

A very small video of crystal clear water in R2, totally 3D:

enjoy ;)

the water in resistance was indeed awesome. if it had real time reflections i think it's probably be the best water in a game. as it is i still prefer the uncharted water since it had real-time reflections (not a reflection map) real time refractions and it's dynamic.

I liked it's physics and the way it moved definitely, but it was way too 'heavy', not fluid enough at all to be water.
And it made a "gluk gluk" sound like....mucus. lol

Anyway back to RaC :)

upon watching the video it does look nice! But seriously, do we really want a platforming collect'athon in 2009? Even mario left that gameplay design behind. Insomniac needs to get with the times and kill this over milked series

This looks very good, while being a bit of a frantic mess. And as a fan of light hearted action games you'd think I'd be all over this. Or at least I did. But the demo of Tools Of Destruction really didn't do anything for me. I tried it several times and after each play was rather glad I had not bought it on a whim at the time.

Hopefully this will be more of my cuppa, because once again it really does ooze atmosphere.

looks fabulous whats impressive is the fluidity of the animations really gives it that rendered film look, wish it had better water especially since this is r2 engine.

mario left it behind? last time i checked mario glalaxy was all about the star/gem collecting? and i wouldnt have it any other way tbh...i like the pure experience of a traditional platformer, and while ratchet has the whole third person shooting mechanic thing going on, it's still a very prue feeling platformer thanks to the crate smashing bolt collecting. same goes for jak...although i do admit i much prefered the precursors legacy to the sequels.

No it isn't R2 engine. for R2, they benefitted greatly from the R&C Future: Tools of Destruction engine in making huge maps with so much going on in skies and around.
its unfortunate that they apparently are not doing the same in return to polish this R&C game even more, by utilizing what they learned from R2 engine.
But this is a great game in its own right and won't disappoint at any level I'm sure.

Well, I'm a big fan of their R2 water tech, it totally surpasses anything on consoles or PC yet. Crysis and Cryostasis show water mostly as in what it does, but not how it looks with physics incorporated in it. this water blows everything else in true 3D wave formation. what else is amazing? Insomniac has made it available for everybody:

Away. It blows everything else AWAY. Important that you have that in there.

Halo 3 had some decent water as well. It had actual deformation, nice looking waves, and did this light scattering thing that depended on the depth of the water/angle you were viewing it at.

basically ratchet and resistance use the share the same continually evolving engine, but i just remembered ratchet is a 60fps game whereas resistance is 30fps so that might explain why the fancy water tech didn't make it over.

Halo 3 had less deformation, more texture-effect for water.
and that is another thing that Halo 3 is Halo 2 in HD(Bungie said so themselves, Halo 3 engine is advanced Halo 2 engine). In 4 years, what did they made? if they didn't changed gameplay, thats one thing but what about graphics and effects...Heh. So, got my point, 4 years for a partially physics based water, hahaha!

No, it wasn't a texture effect. It featured 3d deformation.

Graphics and effects changed considerably from 2 to 3. Whatever though, you haven't been here long and have already been called out for being a fanboy, so I really didn't expect anything different from you.

well you were troll-baiting bringing halo 3 into a ratchet thread r2 deserves to be mentioned cos its a direct relative (sister project) of ratchet but halo is just asking for trouble in a sony thread

I brought up Halo 3 because people were talking about water and its deformation, and H3's happens to be pretty decent. I didn't think anything of it considering Crysis and Cryostasis were previously mentioned.
