First 10 minutes Xbox 360 PS3

In the big family of mindless but very fun game, Red Faction: Guerrilla is the new king. These three videos should give you guys a good idea of what this game is about: Destruction, destruction, and more destruction. Don't look for a deep story or character development, it's all about killing and destroying as efficiently as possible. Personally I love, and our friend Bombstrike who is playing in these videos and spent his week-end destroying buildings with his hammer can only confirm.

been playing this myself via rental and it's awesome. i think the destruction is kinda pointless a lot of the time. there no tactical advantage to destroying most buildings or anything like that, it's just an obstacle or an objective so it all comes across as a bit artificial. the tech is great tho. i just wish you could at least damage the terrain a little, becasue it kinda feels like lego buildings a lot of the time.

fun game tho, the timed destruction objectives are great fun, like boom blox, but with a more advanced physics engine.

One of the best multiplayer games for this gen consoles IMO. And it's not rental, absolutely must buy title.
I can't believe how polished is RF Guerrilla, compared to last games from Volition, which were buggy as hell.

I haven't actually played the game, so I suppose I can't claim this game is bad or anything, but damn...it looks so boring imo. The environments of every vid I've seen are...well...there's just one type of environment it seems. Red sand + rocks + generic building. :|

As a result, the destructability's not all that interesting imo. Oh well, maybe I should give the demo a try first...

yeah, thats what i ment by the "lego" comment i made. even though each sector of the game world comes with a slight colour change, it's essentially a random terrain generation with some buildings thrown on it Sporadically.

that said. it is incredibly fun. sure the missions get repetative just like most open world games, but the actual act of detroying a building one suport structure at a time for some reason feels very rewarding. i almost exclusively use my sledge hammer, just becasue it's so satisfying to take down a building with just that tool. sure you can plant charges and blow it up in about 5 seconds, but wheres the fun in that.

the shooting mechanics are what let the game down a bit imo. they feel kinda sub par compared to other shooters out there, but other then that it's a lot of fun...shame the story wasnt a bit more in-depth tho.

You see, that's my problem right there. I'm not the kind to enjoy doing that stuff over and over again...I'm kind of getting a Prototype vibe from this where there's not really a goal, mearly endless, mindless bashing (here it's destroying stuff, in Prototype it's tearing up enemies).

I think I'll try the demo anyway, see what's up...

I can't believe they've been able to fuck up a franchise this way... Red Faction 1 and 2 were great! The destructibility was limited but useful ( digging tunnels to other rooms, cutting of passage ways in multiplayer)
But here it just seems like some gimmick and the buildings just drop like a jenga tower...

I can understand this game can be fun in a simple way.. But these open world games of late: Infamous, Prototype and this looks so boring... (I've got infamous, and that's fun but gets old really quick)

this isnt even close to the quality of infamous, but it IS fun. tbh i only expect a game to entertain me through a single playthrough anyway, anything more then that and it's a bonus. i will say this tho, i wouldnt have bought this...despite how much i like it. it just isnt varied enough. as you said, it's a shallow kind of fun....pick it up for an hour or so...it isnt a game you can play for hours on end...it just gets too repetative. unlike infamous or GTA where i'm litterally playing for about 12 hours straight.

Yeah I'm not saying this is a bad game or anything but I find that most of these open world games are kind of shallow...

GTA 4 was fantastic but like I said earlier Infamous, Prototype, Red Faction, Bionic Commando all look great and can be fun games, they could've been so much more.....

so is the missions ive just seen in the first ten minutes basiclly all there is to red faction?

free hostages, destroy buildings, shoot at EDF?

is there huge monster mechs? is there huge open vistas that take your breath away?

what is the multiplayer like? what kind of modes and options?

any customizable options?

how long is campaign?

thanks...renting is like ten dollars right?

after seeing i wonder if i should have picked up fracture; another routine third person actioner with a interesting technical/gameplay dynamic, shame this game couldn't have licensed their terrain deformation tech would have been an ideal match. red faction seems the better game though

bionic commando wasnt even open world, so i'm not sure why you're using that as an example...lol

yup, thats pretty much all there is to the game.

the main missions offer a little bit more depth, the side missions however consist of maybe 5 game types, and they repeat multiple times in any given area. attacking a EDF controlled building, defending an area, almost puzzle like building destruction mini-games, taking a vehicle back to a base within a time limit, and some others where vehicles are driving around and you have to destroy them or jack them.

there are walking mech things tho, about 3 or 4 that i've come across so far. anything from fast moving but weak, to heavy duty but slow. there are even EDF mechs that let you shoot dudes.

vista wise...not really, the draw distances are pretty impressive considering the destruction, but as i said, its a random terrain with block buildings scattered on the top of it. it doesnt feel designed...mearly randomised.

cant really speak about multiplayer since i havnt played it, there is a multiplayer demo tho, so you could check that out and see how you like it.

as for how long...depends. i've been playing about 10 hours but i do very few of the side missions (since they're repetative) and i'd imagine i have around 5 hours left...not bad really. easily 20+ hours if you do EVERYTHING.

definately worth a rental tho, or just wait till it drops in price and get it cheap.

The MP demo is free on both systems.

MP reminds me of Tribes, which says a lot.

I have the game. It's certainly not one I'd recommend to buy at a full price. It's very polished but the MP is lacking. It's just not much fun. Most of the missions are all the same. There is a mix up later in the game with some fun missions, but they are sparse and sometimes it just feel like work grinding for the junk parts and assaulting the millionth base that all look/feel the same.

not going to argue with that, it was terrible...lol

what i find weird about this game is that a good portion of the cool moments are usually out of your control. like when you shoot down a flying plane/jet thing and you see it go down in the distance only for it to smash into a building....it looks very cool, and completely unscripted.

one actually took out a target building purely by luck...but it just looked so cool. i wish i could say it was planned, and it was under my control...but it wasnt, a lot of what makes it good is the unpredictability.

Tribe: Bad Company though, rite? ;P

This game looks pretty damn cool. Looks better than the first Red Faction games, even.

Can't wait until the PC version ships, but am still hoping for a demo.

I rented the game after reading a lot of good things about it and pretty much came to the conclusion that you have to be a little bit of a kid to like this game. If you still think breaking stuff and watching stuff go boom is fun in it's own right, then you might like this game. I think the destruction feels like breaking a "lego building" as someone said earlier. Not really any true sense of destruction, just making blocks fall down.

The missions are weak, the story is weak, and the gunplay is REALLY weak. I just don't get why so many people think that this game is so fun. I guess I'm just not as big on breaking stuff as others lol...

I gotta agree with Nietzshe (!). This is incredibly boring game and as he said almost everything about it is "weak" My main complaint 'bout it is that in fact destroying buildings doesnt give You a credit in the terms of tactics, strategy, whatever. RF1 and 2 were cool, too bad this had to end up like this.

I think the game looks a lot of fun just destroying stuff and creating chaos. Whether that is enough to sustain a full game for me remains to be seen as I've pre-ordered the PC version which isn't out yet. The 360 version looks graphically good but the trademark excess of Volition screen tearing would drive me nuts... it looks horrible! Glad I didn't buy that version...

i dont think it's to do with being immature enough to still like blowing stuff up. it's more the fact red faction is a true sandbox game, in the same way crackdown was. there is very little depth in the gameplay itself. but you're giving a small set of skills and you make your own fun/challanges.

nearing the end of the game i spent about an hour taking down this huge tower block that wasnt even a key building, or even part of a mission, it had an indestructable support structure, meaning you had to take it down bit by bit from the top, down to the bottom.

i guess if you have a good imagination you'll love it. if you like everything spoon fed to you, you'll probably hate it.
