PS3

The excellent F.E.A.R. was announced as a launch title for PS3 yesterday, and these five images were released. For some reason it looks like these images are captured using an analog HD capture system like the one I use for my videos, so they look much softer than our usual framebuffer captures.

is this game due in november? it looks kinda strange the last shot for example looks quite low detailed (look at the character and the wall on the left) but it could be down to the capture system i guess

These look really, really bad. I think they need to forget about that launch window and optimize this game as much as possible.

Wow,
I'd give the textures the benefit of the doubt because of the soft captures but it actually looks like they downgraded some of the geometry too. Look at this pic from the 360 version:
http://images.xboxyde.com/gallery/public/3317/1037...

and then at the PS3 version:
http://images.playsyde.com/gallery/public/3907/103...

The helmet in the 360 version is round and the PS3 version is pointed. In the PS3's defense, Condemned (1st attempt with this engine) had more than it's fair share of rough corners on the 360--but I thought this was what the "delay" from spring was supposed to remedy.

Its early yet, and I seriously doubt its as easy to port this game to the ps3 considering how similar the 360 is to most high end gaming pcs. I mean the damn ps3 has a billion processors(j/k). I bet it'll turn out fine, just hope they move one of those analogs on the controller, they are always too close to each other!

The image looks too smooth to be captured.
All the edges are blurred by exactly 4 pixels. You can see on the vertical edges that the original image is the same resolution.

So....
It's fair to assume this is what it actually looks like.

I guess it hides the jaggies. Mostly.
(unfortunatly we are seeing more of this blurring on the PS3... No doubt because of the limited memory bandwidth making antialiasing more difficult). The 360 has the advantage that the extra bandwidth required for AA only hits the EDRAM, and the AA resolve happens on chip, so the output image is native resolution, not AA resolution. Ie the bandwidth hit for AA is basically zero. - thats ignoring tiling, but thats another matter)

i hope this isn't a trend. honestly, who would pay 600 dollars to play this when you can pay 400 and get a better looking version? this may be a muliplatform game that is ported from a PC, which shares a lot of architecture with 360, but even so, there are going to be a LOT of this type of port for the new consoles, and some of them are going to be of great games. you aren't going to be able to avoid it.

you can't blame people for their feelings about the PS3. people should very well expect much, much more out of it since that is what was promised time and time again, and lied about time and time again. not to mention, the price warrants a system that should hands down beat the 360 in visuals. Sony deserves a kick in the balls for this, and i think that's what they might get because i don't think people are going to fall for it the second time around and waste their breath trying to come up with crap like 'well the ps3 can do particles better!'
