god I hate those exaggerated object-shadows, casting is all over the place ... not too happy about the scanlines either
I don't think you "get" what they're going for, if you hate the scanlines. That's the look. It's some sort of alternate universe 80's spoof. The colours, the scanlines, it's all part of the over-the-top cheesy goodness of this game.

wheras the horrible exagerated object shadows is just a poorly implimented SSAO.

And as for the scanlines, the only good scanlines are the real ones - hardware style, y'know ... CRT stuff
