Video PC Xbox 360 PS3

More than 10 minutes of gameplay for Tomb Raider, that's what Square Enix has released today. It shows Lara making her way from a monastery to a shantytown by taking advantage of the environment.

...animations and voice acting/lara's whiney noises are not.

i was pretty sold on this game. but that made it seem worse then it has in the past? that spear through the throat was brutal though. jesus.

whoa, the uncharted bad animations kick in to a even worse degree. She is suposed to be injured, and yet her walking/draging has a disgusting slide animation where she cover 5-10m in 2 steps, and slides with a cruise control velocity. yuck!

Did enjoy the fail cutscenes. thats how the games was shown in the first demoing, and never again shown a gruesome death scene.

Yeah i like the locations. Action parts are pretty boring and on top of that every area is filled with bad guys.
Animations are poor btw as others mentioned above.

Probably will bargain bin'd it later for few bucks.

And done better at that...

The first footage i saw, and the stage demo at E3 was great though, hopefully that's more of a representation of the gameplay.

I understand being a critic, but not just for the sake of criticizing. I can't speak for everyone, but what could possibly be said bad about this game? And how many bench marks of comparisons can we make? What? Unchartered? Really? As a gamer, I would be disturbed if all I had to use was one game to visually compare all games to. It looks like the devs worked really hard to make a Tomb Raider game worth buying. I can only imagine what the devs will be able to achieve with the next hardware consoles coming.

It doesn't matter how powerful the next consoles are if the designers keep turing out the same formula. This game looks to be a collection of the hottest trends over the past couple years. I've never been a huge fan of this series but have always liked the original concept. From what they've shown this couldn't be farther from that. The dudgeon exploration in Skyrim feels more appropriate.

I don't mind amping up the action but I think time should have been spent on trying to innovate Lora's movement and interaction to the world around her offering a fresh approach to acrobatic mechanics and puzzel solving. If that sounds boring look what the Portal series has done.

reminds me of Uncharted, but seems to have more depth in its gameplay and a lot more attention to detail
(ok, both is not that hard to achieve)

very much, It's beautiful, absolutely beautiful!!! the shadows and lighting casting on the trees and plants is what brings the atmosphere lots of depth. and it looks clean too! very few jaggies i see.

this game and halo 4 are two of the best looking titles of this year and the last. almost hard to imagine possible on the xbox, but it seems there is still life in the old hardware yet!!

by the way the area was covered last year in xbox's E3. http://www.gametrailers.com/e3/videos/v1i8gl/e3-20...

it's nice to see it again anyways!!

See, making Tomb Raider be like Uncharted is like the opposite of the series identity. It was never about being cinematic no-challenge affairs. Platforming is a big part of TR, not automatic like Uncharted where you can close your eyes and jump, it should be about positioning and timing. What they've shown doesn't seem to have any platforming, or any tomb raiding, or any elaborate puzzles. Having human enemies was the worst part of previous games but there wasn't much of it, and here the animals are dealt with QTEs.

It doesn't even seem to have an isolation or exploration aspect. Play Tomb Raider Anniversary, you go through long stretches of just platforming, solving puzzles, exploring, without ever encountering an enemy.

Maybe they're hiding all the "tomb raiding" for when you play the game, but if you advertise your game as some mature/gritty action game with cinematic QTE moments and a weirdly characterised victim character who also stabs people in the throat with arrows, I'm not sold.

I think at the cost per game and release rate these days you have to be overly critical no?

Or maybe it's just me who doesn't have a lot of disposable income

To each their own I guess. I think most people (myself included) agree that the visuals and atmosphere are quite good. Most of those who are criticizing are concerned more about the gameplay formula, which imo looks really stale. I think Vansant summed it up quite well by saying that it is a collection of gaming's hottest trends.

Let's see:
Linear, overly scripted story: Check
Cover based third person shooting with enemies around every corner: Check
Survival horror theme: Check
Tons of QTE's and high octane explosive set pieces: Check
Limited interaction and "exploration" down linear paths: Check
Almost non-existent puzzles and tons of handholding: Check
Removing most of the staples of what made the series great: Check
Regenerating health: Check
Lot's of gore and throat stabbing: Check

Normally I wouldn't even comment if this was just some new IP. Unfortunately, I have been a pretty big fan of TR since the first games came out. Granted the recent games in the series haven't been the best, but I don't think abandoning their roots is the right course. I really felt like the new narrative and atmosphere would've been great with a more open world that focused more on INTERACTIVE platforming, and puzzle solving, as opposed to firefights every 10 seconds. Hell, you can't even swim in the game, I think that shows how weak of a TR game this is. I guess I am in the minority.

the debate of who is a copy of who is endless.

It's like saying who can be christened the true rip off of indiana jones. or "gameplay wise" a knock off of uncharted which is a knock off of gear of war, which is a knock off of both Resident evil 4 and kill switch (which are knock offs of a lot 3rd person shooters.)

I pretty much agree with michaelob and digi_matrix. For me Tomb Raider is about tomb raiding, exploration and cleverly placed secrets, puzzles, precise jumping, some shooting, swimming, great level design. Most of it I dont see here. I like much more Tomb Raider games from Core Design (except AoD) than Crystal Dynamics.
