Here is a short video of Virtua Tennis 3, which was also in Sega's PS3 showroom. Even if the ball's physics looked a bit weak sometimes, the game seemed like a huge leap over Top Spin 2.

Only things I don't like though is the way the ball has a yellow trail, that's so arcady, and how there's still no skidmarks made on the clay, that's so not next-gen.. Other then that from what I can see in this movie this game looks awsome.. If the gameplay and online are any good aswell I might even buy it despite already owning Topspin2..

Graphics look nice though, but the animations just kill it for me...
BTW the game looks good. There are some subtle improvements that need to be made, but I'm sure it'll be great when released.
anyway, i would have thought the ps3 version would look slightly better as the arcade version is made on the lindbergh machines which use nvidia chipsets meaning the transition should be smoother to the ps3 compared to switching to an ATI based chip in the 360
or am i wrong ?
Edit: After seeing the vid, the animations are slightly better. But ball physics is CRAP, it feels like a ping pong ball boucing on a table tennis table! The arcady, unrealistic diving and shots seem like a lot of fun, might give this one a whirl.
so my guess would be that the animations won't be better, but it will probably be more responsive and more fun!

I think they could turn it around with VF5, VT5 and Sega Rally, if they take their time and don't rush them out.
VT has always been the better tennis game.
Unfortunately this goes for almost any game out there, I'd hoped we'd see major improvements in that regard this gen, but I guess it ain't gonna happen for a while yet...
Plus this game is a port afterall. Assassin's Creed has incredible transition animations.

Come to think of it, POP has pretty fluid animations/transitions as far as I can remember, and that's developed quite a while back allready.
So I would say it should be possible to do much better this time arround, but barely any devs out there are doing it for some reason.
I guess I stand corrected then... ;)
Don't be so ridiculous, this is a forum, people discuss stuff like this on forums so you'd better get used to it...
I think you understood pretty well that what I meant, but still I will explain it just in case. In most arcade games responsive and intuitive gameplay is almost a rule and things like realistic animations may actually interfere with it as they are more related to realistic gameplay or simulation. So I think it’s not a surprise they are not very present in this game.
Seriously, I know my “tone” may have been a bit off and I apologize for that, but the question was for people to think again if it is worthwhile to discuss the quality of the animations in this game. It’s subjective so I didn’t expect a response : |
Ridiculous? Ridiculous is someone that doesn’t even try to think about someone else’s words and acts “I’m serious Mr. Policeman”.
It's pretty clear that they're aiming for a "realistic tennis" experience, not some "arcadey" game that barely touches on a few aspects of tennis.
And like I said, the animations themselves are very good, it's just the transitions between them that are under par (imo).
Also, look at how well they captured the players, courts, etc...
So that indicates they are putting an effort into making this game much more than just an arcade tennis game.
I can't understand how you think of this game as being an arcade game, because imo, it's closer to a "simulator" than an arcade game.

Seriously, they still produce some awesome stuff from their arcade divisions, and that's exactly what we're talking about right here.
VF5, VT5, and Afterburner are all pretty high up on my list, right now.
