PS3

I've been asked numerous times to reencode our gameplay video of Gran Turismo 5: Prologue from the Game Convention at 60 fps. Well since I always try to keep my promises, there it is. As you can guess you'll need a powerful computer to play the 720p versions smoothly. Also worth mentioning is that the stream also runs at 60 fps.

Video runs fine on my PC..

And since some have been complaining about the environment outside the tracks in GT5 I paid special attention to it.. And indeed it's pretty sad to say that they are using 2D-sprits for crowd and trees etc.. All the detail obviously went into the cars themselfs, and the lighting, which like I said many time beofre are the best I've seen in any racinggame sofar.. But yeah, the rest is pretty lackluster, and I wonder if it will be the same with the physics and AI etc, have they been improved or not? Can't tell from a video.. To me it's obvious though that if they want to run this game at 60fps with 12-16 cars on track some serious comprises have to be made in other parts of the game.. PS3 (or Xbox 360 for that matter) is just not powerfull enough to run everything at that high (detail) level yet.. Maybe PS4 or next-gen Xbox..

oh my god, playing it from the dashboard point of view brings in a whole another dimension

Feels really really realistic, why haven't other racing games used this view before?

As I recall most developers still don't know exactly how much they can squeeze out of the PS3, and if there's one team you can count on to push it to the limits it's Polyphony Digital. In a recent gametrailers.com video, one of the guys said they've still got many improvements to make in the graphics area. They've got until spring/summer 08 to work on the game, so I wouldn't worry about it.

But when you've got 16 cars on track that look so great, with fully modeled interiors, with planned damage and weather effects, all running at 60fps... yeah, it can seem hard to believe! If they can do it, it will be a testament to PS3's power and their skill.

The only thing that bothers me with what's shown so far is that there's no head shake or movement in the dash cam. Hopefully they change that.

Also, thanks for the high quality video. This is why I come here!

Ahem. You're joking right?

Anywho, it looks really slick. The lighting on the cars is exceptional. But the movements of the hands on the wheel seem really unnatural. It distracted me the whole way through.

If they get all that down then Im ready to take GT5 for a endurance race.
Wow, it looks really good.

Your car will likely be the only car with a fully modeled interior when in a race and if you look over at another car it will show an interior but with less textures and polys.

I'd think them to be stupid if this wasn't the case. Why display interiors you're never gonna see?

The only thing looking good in this game is the car shell and lighting, Horrible and i repeat... HORRIBLE looking backgrounds, effects(and lack of), mirrors and self shadowing, the trees and crowd are a complete joke and this game has ZERO AA, an insane amount of jaggies on show there.

Dude... just stop. You know this game isnt close to being done yet. You seriously think that they are going ot leave the mirrors looking like that? ...Also, I dont know whats wrong with your PC, but I dont see that amount of jaggies you are complaining about. The game is running at a very high resolution, so I dont even think not having AA would hurt it. Forza 2, having 2xAA still has more jaggies than this because of the lower resolution (720<1080). Effects? You want fireworks to show up when you pass someone? ...The environments will probably get worked on too. I have a 360, but as soon as this game comes out, a PS3 is coming home with me.

The graphics are kind meh but that can be fixed. The issue I have is the AI and the Physics. Gt4 was weak compared to Forza 1 and 2 in that dept and i dont think they will be able to match Forza 2 with GT5.

Turn 10 has a full on physics engine developed by a team at microsoft which was used for something far more complex then gaming. I dont know if Polyphony can match that.

A little disappointing TBH. physics don't look great, hands don't move to change gear, mirrors look dreadful (probably fix for the final release) and has the glass been smashed out of that car because there are NO glass effects at all. This has the possibility's of making me buy a PS3, but it's going to have to improve a great deal from that video. PGR3 kills it on effects apart from FSAA which was some what lacking in PGR3 and Forza 2 looks much better physically.

It strikes me the most that people didn't say anything about how the
steering wheel does NOT move at all!!!!!! You just see the hands on it sliding around it, but the steering wheel doesn't react naturally at all...dumb as hell.

whats the big deal with 60fps anyways? I'm playing forza 2 right now and I don't see what the big deal is with 60 fps I get a somewhat better sense of speed but thats about it I was perfectly fine with PGR3's 30 fps.

Sense of speed is absolutely crucial in a racing game.

And the steering wheel does turn by the way.
