Shadow of Colossus is really bloody good. Not a good game i don't think but the closest thing iv'e experienced to actually being in the world you're playing. I put this down to the very low resolution and choppy framerate as much as the absolutely brilliant design of course. Very dream like because of that visual stuff struggling on PS2, and i remember thinking how the xbox1 with it's greater power would in fact ruin this- dreams of course being vague things

Will the PS3 be addressing the visual 'failings' then

Yup, one if many reasons i'm looking forward to it. The performance should now be as impeccable as the creative vision.

Yeah i like the clunky feel more but then i wasn't about to buy this version. Went out and bought a PS2 though on the strength of seeing it run on a friends. Everyone should at least try this game the once if they get the chance

Snazzier versions are fine but a lot is lost i find. The recent hires BG&E being an example that i found stripped of it's original atmosphere-characters exposed for their low geometry etc that you didn't see when played on a crt back then. And Halo1 of course which will feel decidely different- which is ok if you like the idea of playing different shiny versions. The trouble with Colossus is that the framerate problems worked in it's favour for me.Having it smooth will of course be what was originally intended but along with the strong design and low PS2 resolution, it's another reason why it feels the way it does- like a dream. More not meaning better

The game was written i presume for the intended 30 frames mark, so unless they've tinkered slightly, it may look a little odd

Forgetting most of what i just said, 60 frames often exposes flaws or things less apparent at their lower framerate. Animation running on a targeted 30 frames might look odd when asked to run at 60. It would be the same thing for Halo, Uncharted running at 60 etc. A lot of this game's charm is going to be robbed

agreed. I went into the game with a sense of wonder and mystical pull-in, but by the time I killed my half dozen colossi I knew it wasn't that a good game and not much tough went into making a good game of what they had created (the world/colossi battles). I still see it as a boss rush game, and I think its a better game in that mind set.

I can tell you how the 3D will look, it will look DARK, very dark, like all 3D. And make it look like everything is in a pop up childrens book full of paper thin layers.

Don't see how it's a bad game at all. They totally nailed the exporation bit to begin with. After that you have the 16 colossi (a bit more than half a dozen) which all are distinct and present different challenges. Personally i tend to see them more as puzzles. You need to figure out how to get on them, how to best climb to your next target and so forth. Just because it's not the traditional formula for how a game progresses that doesn't make it a bad game.

I think a lot of thought went in to making the game a good experience and a good game. I don't see how you could possibly claim anything else. That it didn't conform to your expectations of what it'd be doesn't make bad.

As for all you nostalgia wankers, consider that it might just be that. You remember a game as a kickass magical adventure and then you revisit it later and maybe it just wasn't all that amazing to begin with? Or maybe it just hasn't aged that well? Happens to me all the time. Games that i remember with a certain fondness that i do still love for the memories i have of them, but could never really recommend to someone who never played them before. Let's face it, in a industry where we are still reinventing the whel constantly, most old gams will age poorly as we figure out new ways of delivering better experiences. Some won't but most will.

Ico is a pretty good example of the nostalgia thing. It was pretty damn amazing when it hit, but i'm not sure i could really recommend it today. I'll gladly play though it myself but i imagine that younger audiences won't really be as awstricken as i was my first time through that game.

Both games are wonderful but Colossus always suffered from being overly empty. They could still have had the same sense of desolation had they also included more puzzles and climbing sections. As it was you basically just rode across an empty landscape to each boss battle, then repeated.

SoTC still looks like a huge "living" artwork to me. I guess I will probably never see it as a game. It's just so damn boring.

But ICO on the other side.... I always loved it on my PS2 :)

Oh, so the new addition to this is a Tailor?

Tailor: What ya buying, Wandara?
Wanderer: Power armor...?
Tailor: Doesn't compute.

Or a "Tailer", like Navi (Zelda)? HEEEEEEY LISTEN!

Weird, all the other 3D content has looked perfectly bright, and had smooth varying degrees of depth, no layers of depth. Maybe you was playing crysis 2...that game isnt true S3D, and does actually look like shifting layers. I'm sure it'll look awesome. But thanks for the input.

I think that is more to do with the audience itself then the game. Fewer people appreciate these sort of creative experiences. If it aint got a gun or a sword it just isnt worth a damn, which is a shame tbh since i find ICO to be the far better game of the 2. Better world, better story, better gameplay, better atmosphere....just better. And that isnt nostalgia talking, i only replayed ico recently and loved it just as much as the first time, but i think thats partly due to it being a ps2 title, only a generation old. PSone games however i genuinely struggle with no matter how much i loved them, with the exception of MGS. Mechanically and control wise, they just dont hold up.

never played these before so i dont have to worry about nostalgia breaking hearts when the reality hits that things are never quite as good or magical as when they're first experienced through young eyes. I'm simply hoping for 2 decent games....at a decent price tag.

ICO is an absolute masterpiece and SOTC... well, another masterpiece, to be honest. I can't believe some people here say it's not that good. It's not good, it's amazing!

yeah, that's true; everyone's entitled to their own opinion, obviously, but I honestly believe they're two of the best games ever created. Last month I was playing ICO for the 9th or 10th time and it was as incredible as the first time I played it.

I did enjoy my first time (and second and third) in the world of Ico and am looking forward to getting this box set asap.

To be honest, even if a game, or a movie, (whatever it may be), is getting old and doesn`t shine quite as brightly when placed next to something similar in caliber a decade on, we shouldn`t forget that games like these were great in their day and simply won`t dilute in awesomeness due to the individual player`s affection for how that title made them `feel` all those years before.

.........nostalgia is a powerful thing and I love it!
