Youtube PS4

Since we cannot share the source video of Ghost Tsushima as we do not have it (yet?), we thought you could at least have a better look at the game with the YouTube 4K version. If you watched the steam earlier this evening, compression was so horribly bad that you could barely see a thing. So let's pretend this is better than nothing...
Update: previous trailers added.

Assassin's Creed: Ghost of Tsushima!!!

Sucker Punch was absolutely bothered by the fact that Ubisoft never made an Assassin's Creed set in Japan, so they decided to make it instead. Really loving all the Assassin's Creed similarities. If Ghost of Tsushima is very successful, I wonder if that will make Ubisoft more interested in making an Assassin's Creed game set in Feudal Japan or China, or not bother with it at all in fear of comparison.

For now, it does not seem like there's a lot to fear. I mean, I've liked certain things I've seen, but I can't say I'm impressed and I'd rather it felt less like an AC game.

I understand. We already have Assassin's Creed, so the more unique Ghost of Tsushima is, the better. I still love the Assassin's Creed similarities, because Ubisoft refuses - stubbornly - to make one set in Japan, so this is as close as I can get to that dream.

Having said that, Sucker Punch still has much more to show, like the Abilities and Skills that was only mentioned in a quick text note. It might be much more different, it's just that what they showed was very, very similar to Assassin's Creed: Odyssey.

Except here the world seems very empty, which does not make it look very real to me. I like the way they have used the wind to show where to go, but combat, unless it's very unforgiving and more difficult than what we've seen, worries me and infiltration also seems to lean oon the easy side. The character may have been overpowered, but still, they have much to prove. I've always enjoyed their games so I guess I shouldn't worry too much, but the initial June release (which has now become mi-July) was odd for a highly-anticipated game. As if Sony wanted to get rid of it. I don"t understand why it was never planned for a September release in the first place for example. Conspiration theories I know.

Like many demos, I believe they were playing on Easy difficulty, or maybe the person playing was very skilled, like a Q&A tester. As for the empty world, I believe it's because it's Feudal Japan, where people were mostly on cities and on roads that connected important places. At least that's what I remember from countless samurai movies, TV shows, animes and mangas. Sony released The Last of Us in June 2013, they tend to release high profile games outside of the Holiday season, like Uncharted, God of War (2018), etc. So I wouldn't worry about that.

You're right about TLOU, but its release didn't follow a TLOU equivalent from Sony a month before. As far as I can remember, it's unheard of.

Something I just thought about is that maybe Sony wants to have a clean slate for the PlayStation 5 when it launches in October or November. So maybe they thought that releasing GoT in September or October would interfere with PS5's image. Also, I'm sure they plan on revealing new games for the PS5, as well as the console itself, the price and services in the months before the PS5 launch, so by releasing the last PS4 game early, they get that clean slate and can focus 100% on the PS5. Just speculation on my part, nothing confirmed, of course.

4K video helps to see all kind of jank during combat and enemy AI behaviors .

Honestly the world looking a bit empty excites me more. Open worlds really need to learn the value of negative space. I hate when something pops up every step i take in games. You obviously don't want to go the other end that it becomes way to sparse and boring but this game looks like it has a nice balance to me.

People complaining that the combat isn't soulslike as if we don't have enough games using that system, i d rather have someone else's take on ac/batman gameplay personally. I just need to get hands on with the combat system before judging. Some animations look a bit choppy but that doesn't necessarily mean its not gonna be good to play, it could be for better responsiveness. We ll see, i trust sucker punch.

I think AC Odyssey has a great balance between lots of activities and an big open spaces where nothing happens.

Spot on. Breath of the Wild is another perfect example of this. This game looks like it's also taken a few design traits from it, The change in environment and the visual should counteract any sense of boredom. Red Dead 2 also got this correct.

Impressed with what I saw. The game looks beautiful and I think the aesthetic gives it an elegant atmosphere which I haven't come across much in other open world games. The closest perhaps would be the Witcher 3, although I suspect that game has a much more vibrant world. Elegant but empty and a bit cold speaks to zen. As for the combat, on the one hand it seems to be going very much to what is portrayed in say Kurosawa films with short deadly encounters. I am not really certain how that feels until I get it into my hands, but certainly I feel like everything doesn't need to be Sekiro. It just needs to have a bit of challenge. Second Son was excellent mechanically so I have some hope that SP can deliver in this regard.

Hmmm i don't really see what the fuss is about. Previous GoT trailer was very atmospheric. But this gameplay is just disappointing. World looks empty and boring. And by that i don't mean i miss hundrets of markers from AC. It's just generic and uninspiring design with mostly samey forest and grass fields. The only original distinctive feature is aggressive use of bloom and weird lightning which while interesting in a trailer might be annoying after dozens of hours of actuall gameplay. And the gameplay itself feel like mediocre Assassins Creed clone. Looks alright but nothing to write home about really.

Assassin's Creed: Ghost of Tsushima!!!
Exactly my first thought. Sengoku Period, Tokugawa era, Meiji restoration and numerous others could have been the perfect setting for an AC Japan game but they chose freaking Ancient Greece and Vikings.

I'm literally interested in this game because it looks like an Assassin's Creed set in Japan. The last few actual AC games barely remember what made the series special.

I wish Sony would pull the fingure out and give us some decent quality 4k. The Youtube footage is super compressed.

Maybe it's partly the compression but this gameplay definitely looks like a downgrade to me and I'm not happy about that. It looks extremely washed out, shadow lods are horrible, lighting model looks nerfed, and campfire smoke looks more like smoke from a cigarette, weird. I'm also hoping for more variety than bamboo trees and grass. I'm over grass. Lots of games are doing grass pretty good now days so it isn't that impressive anymore. I will wait for reviews.

the dilemma of a lengthy development i'd wager. I figured as much. not too fond with sony even typically releasing their trailers at uber quality settings. to generate a maximum first impression buzz. it would have impressed a lot more i'm guessing midway through the generation. if there is anything more important the next generation of development tools hopes to achieve, is help maintain quality and release at a much sooner rate. (starting with UE5)

hopefully the tools of the next gen will start living up to their first impression trailers. the FFVII remake though i was going to say, apart from some of the locations in the game. the characters do look more enhanced compared to the first game play renders. i guess final renders are only enhanced if the original targets are at a reasonable budget from the start. then future trailers will begin to impress a lot more.
