Such a shame they are dismissing the cockpit. Virtually every driving game has one. Even GRID 1. For this reason alone, I will not buy this title at full price, or I will wait until a PC modder has hacked a camera view.

As a casual racing gamer I can live without a cockpit view.. i even don't use it in Project Cars where it definitly looks more than decent

This is dead already before release for me. Yes...its because of the cockpit. Racing on pc is sitting in the car for me. Not levitating behind the car.

I use it in every game it has it in singleplayer. I even use the first person mod in GTA 4. I'd understand it if they disabled it in multiplayer in order to get better performance but for singleplayer too? Its madness!

If anything these latest batch of serious games which are in development are showing that they are being held back because of aging console hardware.

The main reason why I liked GRID so much, was the cockpit view.... Well, one game less to buy next year.

For those crying about cockpit you're the minority and TBH it's a refreshing change. So much detail goes into the exterior that at times I feel ignorant playing in cockpit view and granted it can provide a more visceral experience but with the existence of Prior codemaster games, Forza's, Shift's, PGR's and GT5 I can get my cockpit fix ;) elsewhere.

Cockpit or no cockpit they've turned this game into another random arcade racer. Which is great if your into that kind of thing.

I dont care much about cockpit views anyway, a neat rear view is all i need when playing with the controller, wether its Shift, GT5, Forza or DiRT. And this isnt supposed to rival Forza and the likes. First one wasnt a race sim either so im perfectly fine with it being 'arcadey'.

Cockpit view is, for me, key to a racing experience. Though I wouldn't care for this game anyway. Played the demo of the first one twice and that was enough for me.

90% of the people are not using it. Says who? The devs? I always love it, when the devs try to justify their decision(s) with stupid reasons.

So how do we know that the "90%" are real and not a fake? No onw will know the truth.
So, to me it looks like that they try to milk their IPs as fast as possible. Dirt after Dirt (Dirt 2 was the much better game in terms of presentation and variety). Suddenly Dirt Showdown comes out (a spin off and I'm sure they will make a series out of it) and out of nowhere a GRID 2 announcment, even though they said that they "have no plans to work on GRID2 right now" a couple of weeks ago.

Seriously, are you kidding me...

They scrapped the cockpit view to make the game less cost intensive. that's all. I'm not impressed by the graphics either. GRID2 and Dirt 2 had great graphics but c'mon...we don't need another games which looks exactly like any of their other games before (except for Dirt 1), only with different cars and tracks. And two or three new game modes are not worth 60$...

I will see what GRID2 will bring. No cockpit sucks, that's for sure. I don't believe what they said about the cockpit view.

GRiD 2's been announced and been in the works since July two years back (not fulltime though) and by the time it will release it'll be 2 1/2 years. I really cant see a 'quick franchise milking' here. DiRT 3 could have been better though if they had put more time, effort and creativity in, granted.

Thats not accurate at all, lots of peole use it. I hate third person driving. At least a hood camera is fine, but nothing beats a cockpit. No fucking waiting for your camera to catch up to where you're pointing, and lots of awesome immersion. More people should use the cockpit cameras in games, but more than 10% do.

Although I agree with everyone's complaint about the lack of cockpit view, I am still cautiously optimistic about this one. Besides, cockpit view is great, but I don't consider it an absolute requirement for semi-arcade racers. No one complained that burnout didn't have cockpits, and I for one have no problem with a few games here and there going away from the full sim approach.

I think the graphics look great, and I have read it will have some of the best damage modeling ever seen in a game. The physics should also be top notch as far as semi arcade/semi realistic racers go, with the engine taking more than twice as many samples per second than Forza or GT5. With the fact that they have been working on this thing for 4 years, I think they should have this thing super polished.

I'm still not overly hyped, but when Gamesradar (the only preview I have read who have actually played it) claim it has the potential to be one of the best arcade racers EVER, I take notice. I think the lack of assists is great as well, as too many racing games focus on people following colored lines around the track. Here is the preview I am referring to, if there is anyone who hasn't already made up their mind:

and since when was burnout a "semi-arcade" racer?

if you're a full blown arcade game, outrun, burnout, motorstorm, blur, split-second etc, then no cockpit view is fine.

if you're trying to be something even marginally sim-based, then it's a requirement imo.
