GSY Retro Xbox

Since our GSY Retro idea was warmly welcome by the community, here is another bunch of videos from the past! To wrap up our coverage of the Project Gotham Racing series, we obviously had to talk about the two first episodes, so dark10x got you some footage of both games on the original Xbox while Miguel captured a few videos of PGR 2 on his 360. If you're more into Sony, Nintendo and Sega, don't worry, we have tons of ideas regarding our retro coverage. Of course, if you have any suggestions to make, now would be a good time.

Soul Calibur on the Dreamcast would be a good one to cover perhaps, (was the very reason I bought one!).

I remember being blown away by the showroom in PGR2 when it first came out - it was soo cool just taking 'em out for a test drive (especially after you'd fettled the ini files a bit) :)

This is a great idea, showing old games with almost the same quality as playing them back then, amazing for people who didn't get to experience them in their own time :) Along these lines, Shenmue I & II would be amazing :3

Tried MSR on DC a while back and wonder: Damn, how did I play this at the time ? Draw distance is so bad it's almost unbearable, and i'm not even kidding (same with LeMans, played it on a CRT with VGA box). So, just a little warning at this point: While some games like JSR, ShenMue, SC etc. hold up pretty well today, some, like MSR, are not as good as you may remember them.

My favourite racing franchise. Local radio stations in PGR 2 were the best, still have Moopie - Kagoshima on my brain after a decade: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFyHAC85p38

I not only used to LOVE Those games, but I still think about them often. The track details, for the time, were so amazing- they made one hell of an impression. Especially PGR2. I remember the Australian tracks vividly. I used to max out my skills on the Beetle RSI and I couldn't get enough of it. And people who 'fondly' remember MSR are being hipsters. I had MSR and it was lacking in just about every respect. No offense, but it wasn't a good game- it just had good ideas (that PGR polished).

Pgr was a great series. Some of the team from bizzare work at playground games on the horizon series. Imo horizon was a natural progression over Pgr and a better game. Horizon 2 should be amazing.

Wow nice to see a classic game actually look as good as you remember it, these games have aged with dignity.

It was the little details that made the game very good. PGR did many things other racers hadnt done, and having a showroom, that you can walk around, and check all the cars out in, is definitely one of those cool little things that even games today dont do.

The PGR series in general is very good graphically. PGR3 and especially PGR4 can actually hold their ground in terms of going up against next generation racing games. The car models alone in PGR4 had about 100,000-130,000 polygons (inside and outside combined).

Shit, i think PGR3 was the first racer to incorporate a good cockpit view. I want to say it was after PGR3 that it started being considered a standard that racing games have it.

Is it just me, or does PGR 1 look a bit better than PGR 2? It even runs at a smoother frame-rate.

Aww, and Metropolis Street Racer on the Dreamcast too! The coolest thing was the real time of day feature, where it would calculate what time it was IRL in the city you were racing in, based on your Dreamcast's clock and time zone.

I wish my Dreamcast still worked.

PGR3 really made the Xbox 360 seem next-gen (at the time); such a huge leap over anything on the original Xbox. I was instantly sold.

And dat cockpit view with its subtle shakes (or is that nostalgia clouding my memory?).

I honestly don't know what you are talking about. Crisp and clear all the way to the distance with just minor pop-up.

I don't know what you are talking about either, but it can't be about handling, graphics or soundtrack. But the game is quite hard.

I remember what really impressed me about MSR was its fake radio stations, i'd never seen that in a game before. Of course it also looked photo-realistic to my innocent eyes back then

"Ahem..."? Hopefully that is not sign of sarcasm. Or indicating that the game would receive a negative review. Because Blue Stinger belongs to my list of top 10 favorite games of all time. Great adventure!

...when played with NullDC on 1080p. Imo F355 Ferrarri Challenge is one of the few racing games that still looks great on it's original 640x480 resolution. How I feel about MSR ? To put it very exaggerated, follow Link, switch to 144p and you'll see what I mean.
