GSY Review
PC
PS4
Xbox One
The year is almost over and things are starting to slow down in the industry, but it does not mean we still don't have a few nice surprises to share with you. Arise: A Simple Story is definitely one of them, to the point it's going to be one of the most memorable indie games we've played in 2019. If you want to know more, read our verdict and watch our gameplay video of the PC version. We only had time (and courage) to record a video review in French but the good news is you at least won't have to listen to my stuffy nose.
Note: We'll also have Xbox One X videos as soon as we can.
Verdict
Much like Journey and Inside, Arise: A Simple Story has taken us on a roller coaster ride we are clearly not going to forget. Not only is the game artistically superb, it is also great to play with a time control mechanic that gives it a peculiar flavor. Aside from the moving yet simple story, there are so many great moments gameplay wise, as the way time is controlled is dealt differently depending on the level you're in. As a result, there is a lot of variety, in terms of atmosphere, types of landscapes and even gameplay, which makes the 5/6-hour playthrough a joy to experience from beginning to end. There isn't much else to say as we don't want to spoil anything, so if what you see in the video is to your liking, don't hesitate and go buy the game as soon as it launches tomorrow.
- On the upside
- Aesthetically superb
- Awesome animations
- Memorable soundtrack
- Prepare to be amazed
- The time mechanic is a very cool concept
- Much variety (gameplay and situations alike)
- A true emotional roller coaster
- On the downside
- Lack of precision at times (missed jumps happen)
