PS3

Gran Turismo 5: Prologue is almost there now, but Sony keeps releasing new and for the most part amazing looking screens just to keep us hyped. This one can't be released soon enough.

Unbelievable - it's like looking at photos. Obviously there's a little touching up, but that's also because screenshots are poor are representing the game in motion. Got to hand it to the developers - they've nailed the car shaders and models better than any other developer, by far.

Although the backgrounds are fine compared with the competition. Grass is not easy.

GT has always been a game where you watch the replays for the pretty, in game, not so much, same with most driving "sims"

Well, it's looking like a mortal game as it always has been. Great in places but a far cry from the bullshots they keep showing year in and year out.

I think most racing games do this, it's especially noticable in PGR4. When you switch to photo mode, or watch replays the game applies all sorts of filters to make the game look better that aren't present when actually playing.

Frankly, I don't think this game even looks as good as PGR4, the car models are beautiful but look significantly worse in gameplay, and the backgrounds are rather horrible. I can't believe they're still using those static images in the distance. Look at the second picture, those mountains are clearly just an image, that could be replaced by anything.

You obviously haven't played GT5P, or even GTHD. Those mountains are 3D. Not that it matters. You see, when you're playing a racing game, generally you look at things like the road or your speedometer, not the mountains. That's how you crash, which I bet you do a lot of :)

Personally, I have played both GT5P and PGR4, and yes the environments look better in PGR4, but the only time it mattered was when I stopped racing and just drove around the track to admire them. I did that only once per track. It's hardly worth making a fuss over. The cars is what it's all about. The ones in GT5 use twice as many polys as PGR4, and the lighting's way better.

its split screen mode, always gonna lose alot of detail, in single player its a mix of 3d mountains andimages, im more concerned about the horrible trees/scenery and texturing, but id hope thats improved alot by the time gt5 comes out next year, and if they do away with bumper cars, i'll be getting a ps3 for it

I can truly see how horrible the backgrounds on GT5P are. Those are some really nasty textures.

You mean the mountains 'seem' 3D. In GT4 a lot of smokes & mirrors were used to make the game seem great looking, but from a technical standpoint, it really wasn't that impressive. GT5 also uses tricks. Technically, PGR4 is more impressive so far because all the effects are realtime.

I believe these are UN touched up shots actually. THIS is what the game really looks like when you're playing, unlike those earlier shots with perfect AA and motion blur in dashboard view (the JPN version at least lacks high quality replays in that viewpoint).

The game IS the best looking racing game, have no doubts. It easily trumps any other racing game visually.

I hope they add the extra content in the US version to the Japanese version as a free download, but if they don't I actually may pick up THIS GT5P too. But I'll wait a while and see...

The mountains are 3d polygonal surfaces, but they use normal maps to make them look more detailed than they are in a polygonal sense. Nothing unusual there at all, it's a typical videogame 'smoke and mirror' effect that's used in any decent game these days. [edit : you actually wouldn't have to use a normal map, now that I think about it, because the lighting never changes and the viewpoint doesn't change significantly.]

All games use tricks, but GT5 IS the most impressive. PGR4 has no more 'real time' effects than GT5. Both use mostly precooked lighting for the tracks, both use shadow mapping effects for the shadows on cars. GT5P runs at a higher resolution, a higher framerate, AND has higher polygonal models (that were scanned using lasers, so the proportions are going to be more accurate than an artist modeled car). In addition, the shader effects on the cars in GT5P are extremely good, and all of that is real time in gameplay of course.

In replays GT5P takes an additional step towards excellence in graphics. The framerate is cut to 30fps (and drops lower still often), they add a 'heat wash' effect with refraction shaders, motion blur, and other cool 'hacked' effects like the spokes on hubcaps with reflect light as you'd see on a spinning wheel in reality. The effect is very convincing.

The thing is I think the people at Bizarre are overrated. GT5P has proven that to me. Maybe a 360 could do all this, and maybe it couldn't. Odds are the 360 would do some of the effects better and some worse. Either way, GT5P has shown that both systems have FAR more headroom than I previously expected. It's up to the developer to exploit that power.
