Xbox 360 PS3

Here is that much (?) awaited time, the video comparison of both PS3 and 360 versions of Grand Theft Auto IV by Dot50cal. And in the end, the differences seem to be totally meaningless. Some speak about aliased shadows, 630p and other niceties, but what I see here is a slight difference in tint. But I guess fanboys will find much to argue about anyway.
We'll do another video showing what should (or not?) be the big difference between the game, the famous pop-ins.

Fair play for bothering but comparisons really serve no purpose as fanboys are blinkered and facts are meaningless to them.

I'm just glad both sets of console owners can play this great title

lol. and while you wait, your copy could be being stolen by some crook at the UPS http://arstechnica.com/journals/thumbs.ars/2008/04... and you might end up never seeing the game :P

as for the differences, can't seem to understand how a 4 GB instalation on the ps3 only reduces the load times in a couple of seconds, according to kotaku...

The PS3 has ever so slightly warmer colours, other than that they are identical. Who really cares though, it is a gorgeous looking game.

PS3 has warmer colours and is darker, xbox 360 is lighter but you can see more detail particularly in Nico's face.

Proper comparision should be about frame rates during missions, actual gameplay were it actually means something!

Anyway I got my copy in the mail today, reading through the manual :D

How convenient. Check again. PS3 is muddier and had less detail (630p). 360 is brighter and has more detail (especially noticeable on the faces).

Anyway, this game is truly a masterpiece and more fun than I expected. Rockstar have completely outdone themselves yet again. I've been playing the game for about 6 hours strait, half of that on MP and the other half in SP, and I haven't seen this mysterious pop-in I keep hearing about. Strange to say the least.

Unless if you're one of those nerds that needs to nitpick the most insignificant details between the 360 and PS3 versions, they are to me pretty much the exact same thing. Fanboy wars between the two versions are one of the most absurd conflicts I've ever seen since both the 360 and the PS3 are so close to each other in terms of quality. The only problem I see here is if you own both systems and are having problems deciding which one to get. Otherwise, just get whichever one you own the console for and just simply enjoy the fact that you get to play GTA IV. Love GTA and am also looking forward to SR2 as well. Gonna be a great summer.

near as i can tell, the PS3 has better lighting (far as realism and diffusion go, its more dynamic) but is a bit murkier as a result. The 360 is sharper, but has a static lighting.

Also for the little girls out there they both look the same get over it. Can't belive some of you are going on like 6 year olds over a game. T he human race sicken me to no end.

PS3 version is definitely better, both in colour and clear anti-aliasing. 360 version's colours are clearly washed out and hell there is aliasing too:

Yeah the ps3 version pulls a halo 3. Its not native 720p its upscaled and filtered and stuff to give the effect of 720p. Not that it makes a huge difference, but as some people say some little details are lost in the upscale. Having said that the ps3 version thanks to its install doesn't suffer as much texture popin. My 360 version does get quite a bit of popin if i drive really fast.

I have both consoles but obviosly went with the 360 for its extra content and because all my friends own 360s, so it would be stupid to get the ps3 version and play online with random people.

Thanks Ken, no really.

I'd rather not lose hard-disk space to an install (that's what my PC is for), and it looks no better, so 360 it is.

You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about 720p or 630p makes absolutely no difference in the overall detail of the textures, such a small resolution difference isn't even noticeable and if it wasn't made public no one would ever have known. If anything the slight upscaling of the PS3 version gives it a softer feel hence the illusion of anti-aliasing.

What the hell are you talking about? They both use the same lighting system.

They are the same damn games people, there are no significant differences between the two other than the hardware used to render what you see. They both suffer from pop in, they both have real time dynamic lighting, they both have pop in, they both have sharp detailed textures at times and muddy washed out textures at other times and they both look like great games. End of argument.

Some of you guys need to take off your fanboy colored glasses

I think the ign review was good, it said you should buy GTA on the console that your mates own. And I agree with that statement. But if you have both consoles and so do your mates, the 360 despite its popin should be the choice, simply because of the downloadable content.

Well initially there was supposed to be an option that would allow gamers to install the game on the hard drive of the 360. For some reason it seems that the devs changed their minds. It seems that even with the pre installation on the PS3 doesn't give it immunity when it comes to pop in, but there will be less. One can only wonder, had this option been included with the 360 version, would it have been the clearly superior version. I don't think there's any excuse for blurring a game just to hide aliasing, which explains so many of those muddy screenshots the devs kept releasing. I have no idea why I preordered this game, but I guess I'm just another victim of hype. I'm so disappointed in myself.
