GSY Video PS4

As Guerilla Games announced it a few days ago, a patch was made available just in time for the launch of Horizon: Zero Dawn. PS4 owners will now be able to choose between Performance mode (with enhanced graphics - though it's not clear what is improved - and a steadier framerate - still at 30) and Resolution mode (2160p checkerboard resolution and more detailed textures). We recorded some 1080p to show you the difference, so tell us what you think. The 2 videos start with the performance mode.
Update: 3 comparative videos added, this time recorded in 4K. All 3 start with the resolution mode. 4 images have also been added.
Update 2: Second comparison gallery added.

Can't honestly say I can see any difference between the two modes in either quality or frame rate.

Basically the 2160p checkerboard mode had some very rare dips below 30fps so the performance mode is just 1080p with perfect 30fps locked. No visual improvement unfortunately based on some people testing the mode

Wow, the draw distance in the second video is insane and you can see machines really far in the distance!

Contrary to what they indicate. I didn't really see any difference, other than the fact that there is a little bit more aliasing in 1080p apparently.

Can anyone kindly clarify whether these two videos are entirely in performance mode or is there an actual shift between the two modes in both videos? (I'm skipping parts because I want to minimize location spoilers).

The perfectly locked framerate has been tested from people on neogaf and digital foundry but they also said no visual enhancements at all in performance mode which is weird because the mode description implies otherwise.

There are points in the videos where they go into the menus and switch modes. Basically you can tell the difference based on the image sharpness. 4k mode is much more crisp while performance mode which is 1080p looks blurrier especially if you look in the distance

their engine seems optimised to 30fps, contrary to something like FFXV with tweaks is all over the spectrum.

Hey Driftwood, thanks for this. Any chance of a non-spoilery cutscenes from the game? While facial animations seem mixed, the character models look very impressive overall.

We'll save that for Monday, when the final embargo lifts.

Are we now calling upscaled/checkerboard resolution the native resolution? If that is the case, every Xbox One S game is 2160p.

Would love for somebody to find the same area of the map as the E3 2015 reveal and see what it compares to today. I remember the foliage in the reveal that Aloy was hiding in had some weird bendy animations going on when she moved through it

Your first mistake is thinking checkerboard is the same as upscaling. Lol

It is a different form of upscaling, correct. Don't turn this site into N4G, guys.

Not really. It's a rendering technique. Is it the same as native 4K? Surely not, but it's not upscaling either.

And I might point out that you're the first person to use the word "native" in this thread.

When you upscale something, it is rendering it. It is a different form of rendering. I can lend you some links to help you out, peer to peer.

To quote Solaire... jolly cooperation is pretty rad.

Upscaling is post. After the image is rendered at whatever resolution it's rendered at.

Temporal projection/checkerboard rendering reconstructs the image as part of the rendering pipeline. It's not even close to the same thing. And the results are worlds apart as well. Rainbow Six Siege looks great at 1440p and 144hz with this method. Surely doesn't look like it's rendered at half resolution. Nor is it the blurry mess that you see upscaling 1080p to 4K.

Do you really think the results are the same? Checkerboarding produces some artifacts but a much sharper image.

Set your render scaling to 50% in any game and compare it to a checkerboard image.

The professionals who know what they are doing disagree with you.

http://gamingbolt.com/ps4-pros-checkerboard-4k-ren...

It is another upscaling technique. Which is fine, 540p games upscaled on 360 looked really good. Don't call checkerboard upscaling other that just better upscaling.

Peace... waiting for my ban Gamersyde/Yoshida.
