Xbox 360 PS3

Borderlands had completely disappeared since the Game Convention last August where it was already quite an impressive game thanks to its huge weapon variety. And now, one month from E3 it's back with a brand new art style, quite a bit like Crackdown's but more detailed. Let's hope for a new trailer soon!

The new art style gives the game the personality it lacked before... :) This looks pretty awesome now!

Yep!

Hopefully the game is as good as the visuals.

Reminds me more of XIII rather than Prince of Persia (which has a more abstract style), especially with the cliffs and beach there. Damn, I want a XIII sequel so bad!

Ontopic, the game's looking pretty good. Just need to see some actual gameplay and some cool environments...

I just can't understand why developers with such talented art teams haven't used these resources and developing an rpg with visuals this stunning. Sometimes I don't think the devs have a clue.

I dont like the art style too much. I thought the game was suppose to be like mad max but instead this reminds me of team fortress 2. This style would be great for other games but not this one.

Problem is, Crackdown didn't do very well. Cell shading has a history of alienating people from games. Valkiria Chronicles (I think that's the title) is also a good case in point, along with XIII.

I personally love the way this game is shaping up, but I still think it will fail at retail because the style is an acquired taste, and most of the people buying games nowadays are tasteless morons.

it isnt the visuals that alienates people from games like VC, it's the gameplay, it isnt a standard JRPG so it has already put off the Final fantasy crowd, and it isnt direct action so it's put off the action crowd. it's become a niche GAME, the art style has very little to do with it.

as for games like XIII, it wasnt exactly a raved about title. and got pretty average reviews (even though i personally enjoyed it) THAT is what alienated people, not the artstyle. same goes for afro samurai, the game being average is what killed it's appeal, not the fact it looked like a moving cartoon.

as for crackdown, that game did very well sales wise (but then it had the halo 3 beta attatched to it) but those that played it generally enjoyed it anyway.

in terms of borderlands, the thing which is going to make or break the game is the quality of the GAME. and so far i really dont know what to think about that aspect of it....BUT, in terms of the art style, i love it. the game wasnt even on my radar before, but now it looks great, just like POP, crackdown and afro.

WTF is with this cel-shading? Great. Way to kill my buzz for the game. Now instead of playing what I thought was going to be a dramatic horror thriller, I'm going to be playing a cartoony comedy.

God awful.

Crackdown wasn't a HUGE seller first, too much lulz taken from the "Buy a Beta - Free game" situation, wich was very unfair.
But to this day the game has had decent legs, because it replaces the dissapontment people have with the lacking of "genuine fun" in ALL sandbox games this generation.

looks absolutely fantastic

from the shot used for the header of this game I though "meh, another one of these soulless shooters", but the new art direction totally put this game on my radar

Feels like a true comicbook in motion, but the style takes a bit of getting used to, especially if you know how it used to look. The biggest difference to me seems to be the black outlines and some comic book (almost Fable like) distortions of the human anatomy. All in all, looks like it could be a winner, but they shouldn't have swaped styles like this so far into production, it's bound to somewhat confuse a lot of people, myself included.

I'm just glad they didn't use the art style to justify a lack of detail. This and PoP show how a game can be stylized and still boast artistic detail and integrity...
