The return of the modern king in the role-playing strategy genre (SRPG) is awaited on the Playstation 3 with Disgaea 3. Developer Nippon Ichi is being conservative in the graphics department, which is still a skilful mix of traditional 2D and 3D. Discover some images of the game and a recent trailer (sorry for size).

what a waste...
what a waste...
I agree, a waste--especially considering that a PS2 is more than capable of better presentation, unless the gameplay videos sure to come blow us away...
Graphic wise this game was good enough already on PS2, looked clean and so on.
Or at least they should port it to multiple platforms at least.
It's somewhat encouraging to see, also, that they're starting to move games over to the PS3. Say what you want about the way MS farted in the face of Xbox users, but they got games moved over to the 360 really early, which also encouraged people to get one - subsequently jumpstarting it as a viable platform. Granted it resulted in high res PS2 games in a lot of cases, but there are advantages to that aswell. We got achievements in Dynasty Warriors. :D
Anyhoo, if you're a Sony/Playstation gamer having bought a PS3 it isn't really a huge comfort to have games on the PS2 instead with all of its image quality problems and lack of robust online features, even though the system could handle it. You don't wanna pay PS3 style prices for a game like this of course, but having it play perfectly and being tailored for the console that is the centerpiece in your A/V setup is actually pretty nice. The whole "make it a backwards compatible PS2 game!" is just as flawed an argument as it was with Xbox games on the 360. I dunno about you, but half of the games supposedly "backwards compatible" I wouldn't even consider plays in their original form. Sound issues, framerate issues, borders, non-vga play, gimped online features, et cetera.
In addition, I think it's worrying if games like this aren't allowed to come out on high end systems, because that'd ultimately mean there's no place for them at all. I keep hearing people say that the Wii is stupid because the tech in it is weak, and that games could be cheap/basic and come out even on a more powerful system... but that's not the reality at all. If we want all sorts of companies, small and big, to be able to bring forth their ideas we can't realistically expect everything to look like Gears of War. And unless we want to keep our Dreamcast around for games that *could've been done on that system* then we'd end up with a fuck-sized pile of consoles under our tellies. While that's basically a reality for me already, I sincerely don't see the advantage of that.
I'm all for digital distribution by the way, if you're of the PSN angle, but the truth is that not everyone is. Sometimes with good reason. There's little about digital content that feels entirely future proof, and to some it just won't be the same to pay for something as intangible as a downloadable game.
graphics - or well, Disgaea always looks bad, this is tradition for tJRPG
